A NOTE FROM KATHRYN

"As an young aspiring musician/singer, I had many private teachers.  Most of them were not right for me.  Problems I experienced with teachers varied from the inability to relate to my taste of music, not understanding songwriting, being distracted or just not listening to my needs.  Their list of clients and/or cost seemed to have nothing to do with their ability to teach.  I went through a lot of money and heartache during the search for the right mentor.  This experience led me to the decision to become a teacher myself.  I wanted to be the kind of teacher I needed in the beginning - someone conscientious, caring, understanding and encouraging who LISTENS to what the student wants.

If you are seeking instruction, I've come up with a list of questions you may want to ask a potential teacher to possibly save you the grief that I went through - 1)  What is your performance background? 2) What is your academic history? 3) Do you perform regularly (when/where)? 4) Why did you become a teacher? 5) What styles/levels do you teach?  6) Do you work with songwriters/are you a songwriter?  7) What qualities do you possess that you think make you a good teacher?  8) Do you have any current recorded music that is being sold?  Good luck!"

Academically, Kathryn has a BM in Jazz Studies and a
MM in Commercial Music from Cal State, Los Angeles, where she graduated
