| A single
cylinder deadbolt is usually used on doors
without glass. They are more convenient because you do not require
a key to lock the door from the inside. Some prefer them even on doors
that have glass, because of the threat of fire. If you need to get out
in an emergency, all you have to do is twist the thumb turn and open the
door. A double cylinder would require a key to get out. This
requirement makes them a potential fire hazard.
While the single cylinder is more convenient, the double
cylinder can be more secure on doors that have glass. Should
a burglar break the glass, they could not reach in and unlock the door.
It should be understood that both locks appear the same from the outside
and cannot be distinguished from one another without a clear view of
the inside part of the lock. Also, doors that have large solid panes of
glass do not benefit from a double cylinder deadbolt because if the
burglar breaks the glass, they could simply walk through the
door. |
