Black Velvet Borgia-style Gown

It was a hot summer's day when this photograph was taken. The gown is made of black cotton velvet; the hanging sleeves are lined with a cotton/metallic fabric.

The sleeves are cartridge pleated onto the bodice as can be seen in the detail of “Christ Taking Leave of His Mother” by Lorenzo Lotto, circa 1521. The skirt is also cartridge pleated onto the bodice; the same can be seen in the Lotto detail and the Raphael portrait.

The chemise is made of a number of pleated panels which are tied together by satin ribbons with aglets as shown in the portrait of Lucretia Borgia.
