Charming two story contemporary with 2200 SF
of heated area. Two children bedrooms upstairs and master bedroom
downstairs. Lots of light, cathedral ceilings everywhere.
- Designed in vernacular farm style, using inexpensive
building materials, for a young couple with two preteen
children. The 25-acre
site, in the Piedmont foothills, consists of rolling
woods featuring a spring fed stream. The winding driveway
discovers the house at the edge of a bluff overlooking
the stream. The house is the first of several buildings
on the site that will include at least a garage and a
barn for horses.
- The main floor features an open plan with cathedral
ceiling open to the second floor. The raised floor
kitchen is the center of the space that ties indoor and
outdoor living areas. The master bedroom has privacy and
plenty of space, with an innovative dressing area. The
children bedrooms open to a play loft in the upper part
of the living room permitting close surveillance from
downstairs. The entrance provide privacy from unwelcome
visitors. The "stair
to nowhere" in the play area was a great success
with the children. The built in barbecue pit is a great
idea instead of a fireplace.
- A separate garage complements the main building. A wood burning boiler and water
source heat pump provide comfort at minimal expense.
- The plan is very compact,
providing surprisingly spacious rooms in a 2200 SF house.
The daylight basement is used as shop . Solar orientation
requires that the rear deck be on the South side.
- Effective overhangs, no gutters and pre-finished exterior
siding, keep maintenance to a minimum.
