2700 SF, private 2 bedroom contemporary.
- Designed for a mature divorcee, gourmet cook, ex Air
Force pilot, occupies a cul-de-sac lot on a wooded ridge, separating several
ponds.
- The completely open plan has no interior doors, not
even to the bathroom. Privacy is achieved with distance and by articulating
the spaces with changes of floor levels. The only private space is the guest
suite downstairs.
- The roof structure connects all the spaces under a
single eave.
- The decks follow the slope of the land extending the living area well into the
woods.
- The kitchen has every possible appliance, an
extensive pantry and becomes a bar at one end for serving, complete with ice
maker and wine rack. It is the focal point of the living room.
- The raised office, opposite the kitchen, is the
command center from which the owner can oversee everything without being seen.
- The master bedroom suite has a steam shower, a
laundry and the view of several lakes in winter..
- The exterior materials and colors were selected to make
the house disappear in the
background of the
woods. The low E glass completes the illusion by reflecting the sky and making
the house almost transparent.
- Weathering finishes, wide overhangs, and no gutters
reduce the maintenance.
- Careful orientation and siting is required to take
advantage of passive solar features. A water source heat
pump ads to the unobtrusive, highly efficient energy
management.
