This page contains a collection of scripts that are mostly freeware (donationware).

BackupCpio (Mac OS X 10.2.x required)

Backupcpio backs up all the contents of the Users and root directories. Each item (file/folder) is backed up to a separate file that can be restored separately. Files are named the same as in the original name with the .cpio extension.

Backupcpio is designed to be run by periodic (cron) every night, week or month. You can also set it up to run manually. Being a shell script, it's extremely flexible. Features include:

• Provides a report in the periodic log (see /var/log/daily.log, /var/log/weekly.log or /var/log/monthly.log, depending on when you run the backup - by default, daily) that tells you what was backed up.
• There should never be any permissions problems since the script runs as root.
• All permissions and ownership is backed up and restored.
• Backs up to anything: an iDisk (if you have a fast Internet connection), a networked Mac, PC, Linux box, an external hard drive, whatever.
• Icons are restored to their original location.
• Folder icons are all restored as they were originally.
• Packages are all fully restored.

BackupCpio is shareware. If you keep it, please donate $5 by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.

Crypt (new version 1.2 9-AUG-08)

This script is designed to be used like a command to encrypt/decrypt files. It uses RC-4 (128-bit) encryption technology, which is the same as what most secure web sites use. Encrypted files have the .crypt suffix appended to the file name.

Crypt is free and very powerful. It uses open source (OpenSSL) technology and can be used to encrypt/decrypt as many files as you want in a single command.

GetResFromIRB

GetResFromIRB is a script that reads the hexadecimal data in JPEG images and displays the resolution in the IRB (Image Resource Block) data. It's clunky, not very fast but it works.

And when you need to check the IRB resolution, this script comes in very handy.

blast

blast is a command to send a mass plain-text e-mail to all the addresses in standard input. It can also send attachments. Sendmail must already be configured on the computer for blast to work. A HTML version is being developed. Contact the author if you're interested.
