| "Actors, deep down, want to know themselves. They are compelled to know themselves. To become intimate with themselves -- and by extension, become intimate with others. But it all begins with the self. Acting is work on one's self." |

Operating continuously since October 2001, the Austin Acting Workshop offers a technique that breaks the acting process into three phases: Analysis, Presentation, and Activation. Specific, concrete, easily manipulated tools are identified and associated with each phase and the utilization and application of the tools is elucidated in detail. Participants gain practical experience by applying the technique and performing their own previously prepared material for and being critiqued by fellow participants and also by observing and critiquing the performances of others. Extensive monologue work and scene work are included. In a relatively short period of time the workshop assists any aspiring or established actor in becoming a consummate craftsperson, capable of quickly, confidently, and effectively presenting any style of text imaginable. Barry Pineo, the leader of the workshop, is a long-time Austin-based award-winning actor, director, playwright, and arts writer for the Austin Chronicle. His book on his very special acting technique, entitled Acting that Matters, is published by Allworth Press of New York. If you'd like to sample some chapters, then click on any of the links immediately below. Barry is currently working on another book, entitled The Perfect One-Minute Monologue, that will incorporate much of his technique. Each workshop meets nine times over an approximately 8-week period on Saturday mornings, 9:00 am - 12:00 noon, at the City Theatre in Austin, Texas. If you'd like to see what other folks have to say about the workshop, then check out these recommendations from former workshop members. It's also possible to audit a workshop session before making a commitment.
