welcome to thINk

Once in a while I wander the web, or somehow somewhere learn something new, cool, important, or just plain fun. This page is a running history what I come across. I'm sure that it will get outdated in no time, but deal with it.

Life's a drag? Need a jump start? or do you just thINk different?
Check out SuicideGirls - smart, sure, unique, alive.

Intelligent insanity - For strange stop-action animated fun, check out the view of 'history' that Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and company have cooked up in the "Robot Chicken", featured in cable tv's "Adult Swim" lineup.
Here is a good starting point to find out more.

Apple switches from PowerPC chips to Intel.  This is not as black-and-white as many may think, Apple does get a cheaper and cooler-running chip in the short term.  The Apple contract for IBM was always more about mind-share and publicity, than profit.  IBM's chip fabrication and design teams are running at near-full capacity, so financially this is not directly an unexpected or devastating blow.  The boys at Blue are among the best chip architect and fabricators in the world, and THAT is part of the problem.  Most of IBM's power-crew are stuck in a mind-set of ultra-high end design only, and their planning and management teams have had little success internally coming up with truly viable and marketable PowerPC for low power and high volume industry sectors.  IBM thinks it would like its Power architecture to take off and be embraced by other vendors and fabricators, but as can often be the case they flounder when trying market their often brilliant ideas (there are too many to list, but for example:  the failure of OS/2, the track-point device, and the PC itself are still sore points among many loyal IBM workers).
This does NOT mean that IBM will fail to create and grow the PowerPC culture, it just means that it may take longer that it could or should take.  Remember, at least for now, IBM has quietly and brilliantly cornered the lucrative game console market - Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo ALL use IBM power-derived chips.  The resulting new 'cell' family of processors (found only in the Playstation) are truly amazing, but do not necessarily fill all needs for all people right now.  The little cell processor is a good start, and a great example of where PowerPC can go.
IBM, like quite a few companies, is blessed with a glut of genius and great ideas, but the demands of Wall Street have perverted how innovation companies operate.  Significant investment in long-term/future strategy is difficult now with bean-counters and Wall Street leaches wanting every penny to show immediate results, rather than assuring long term prowess, growth and viability.
