NWA 2828

THE 7TH SPHERE OF MY COLLECTION

COMPLETED APRIL 16TH, 2007

I spotted a whole specimen of this material on eBay listed by Greg Hupe. I contacted him directly & he gave me a good deal on a 599 gram specimen . I sent it to to John at The Rare Earth Trading Company & went into my normal holding pattern. He completed the sphere very quickly. I was pleasantly surprised when I received it. I didn't think the material would accept a polish but it has a very nice luster to it. The coloration is amazing. I have several slices available for sale for $1 per gram

Name: Northwest Africa 2828 - This is an OFFICIAL meteorite name.

Observed fall: No

Year found: 2005

Country: Northwest Africa

Mass: 8.7kg

Classification: EL3 / Paleo-Meteorite

Circumstances of the fall or discovery: Purchased in December 2005 by Greg Hupé from a Moroccan dealer in Tagounite. Thirty-six pale gray to whitish stones lacking fusion crust with a total weight of 8672 g. Several stones have exterior light orange staining, and two stones contain one or two dark brown cross-cutting veins of magnetic, fine-grained iron oxide and hydroxide minerals. Although NWA 2828 was recently clessified as an aubrite, examination of new material requires revision of that classification. New information on the find site in Algeria indicates that these stones were excavated from a subsurface deposit, and we have found terrestrial rhyolite pebbles and sandy matrix attached to several NWA 2828 stones. Thus this is a rare example of a paleo-meteorite or 'fossil' meteorite.
