LIBYAN GLASS THE 17TH SPHERE OF MY COLLECTION COMPLETED MAY 16TH, 2008 I had been looking for a large specimen of Libyan Glass for some time & even purchased a few pieces only to discovery that they were too small to produce a 50mm sphere. Once again, Serge of the Cometshop Team came through. He contacted me with info about 3 large specimens he had & his price was very competitive. I selected a 900 gram specimen but explained to Serge that I wasn't sure if it I could process it with my equipment. He sent it without asking for payment. After I received it & determined that it was large enough to produce a 50mm sphere I posted some inquires about cutting it at the Met List. I was told it cut very easy with a lapidary saw so I proceeded to process it. I easily had enough material to make my sphere rough, a smaller sphere rough, some end cuts & a few slices. I was able to sell enough of the excess material to cover my original investment. John at The Rare Earth Trading Company quickly made a 50mm and 25 mm sphere from the 2 roughs that I sent him. The color and translucency of each sphere was stunning. Despite all trouble I had finding a suitable piece of this material I'm glad I didn't give up on it. I sold the smaller sphere to a fellow collector & proudly added the 50mm sphere to my collection. |
