Museum of Contemporary Photography Midwest Photographers Project

Inaugurated in 1982, the Midwest Photographers Project is a rotating collection of photographs from both prominent and emerging photographers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The artists are represented in the museum's Print Study Room by a body of work from a current project loaned to the museum for a two year period. Included with these photographs are extensive artist's files with slides of other projects and biographical information. This archive serves as a resource for students, researchers, curators, historians, and the general public. All of the works may be viewed by appointment.

Modern Architecture Portfolio By Bob Herbst Sonata The Peter B. Lewis Building, Cleveland, Ohio 12x20 Platinum/Palladium print

In April of 2003, I was invited to submit a portfolio of my modern architecture work for consideration in the Midwest Photographers Project. The portfolio was accepted and will be a part of the project for a two year period. Included in the portfolio is earlier work in Paris, Cleveland, and Akron as well as new work of the Peter B. Lewis Building on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. The Lewis Building work was all done with a 12x20 camera. I was working late one day and stayed around to see how the setting sunlight and twilight played on the acres of stainless steel shingles. What I discovered instead was a symphony of constantly changing reflections of nearby street lights, traffic signals, and automobile headlights, tail lights and turn signals at the nearby intersection. I began a series of time exposures of the different reflections which was a process of discovery in itself. Each image was built up over a period of 7-13 minutes and I really did not know what the final image looked like until the negative was developed. The light dancing across the surfaces evoked an image of a "symphony of light" and so I have used musical terms to title the images.
