Throughout history flowers have been a powerful image. They represent a range of human emotion and give example to the lavish provision that God extends even to the most insignificant grasses.

My near obsession with painting flowers comes from my desire to intimately experience their profound beauty. To do so, I typically isolate my view to a single bloom or flower center in order to explore the complex shapes and color found there.

My choice of subject is generally determined by a shape, color, or a particular rhythm that captures my attention and almost compels my exploration. Similarly, my choice of scale, often large, is central to my own, and your–the viewer's–experience. It is a "bee's-eye view" of the subject that allows for an enjoyment of the intricacy, mood, and sheer luxury of nature.

Within my larger body of work a series of flower centers has emerged. By taking a macroscopic focus on the complex shapes and color relationships of a single bloom's core, my work begins to move away from floral representation and enters into a form of abstraction–the simple, and sometimes surprising, enjoyment of shape, color, and contrast.
