SCENIC TRAIN

The Catskill Mountain Railroad
Scenic Train is a 12 mile round trip between Phoenicia and Boiceville, NY ,
which makes a wonderful hour and thirty minute railroad excursion. After
arriving at the Mount Pleasant depot, purchase your ticket from the agent on
duty.
There is plenty of free parking at the station, and you will have the opportunity to visit our snack bar and gift shop....Then it's "All Aboard!"
After departing Mount
Pleasant, your ride will be along the Esopus Creek, famed for its scenic beauty
and great fishing.
You may even spot bald eagles, great blue herons, hawks, deer and other wildlife along its banks. Framing the beautiful Esopus Valley on either side of the creek are Mount Tremper to the north and Mount Pleasant and Romer Mountain to the south. At Phoenicia, step into the past by visiting the historic 1900 railroad depot, home of the Empire State Railway Museum.
Here
Passengers can explore railroading both past and present on the Catskill
Mountain Branch Line of the old Ulster and Delaware Railroad. Upon re-boarding,
the train now sets out for our eastern-most terminus at Coldbrook, located in
Boiceville, N.Y. Now heading East we cross Route 28 on our newly installed
railroad crossing, which became operational in the Fall of 2004. This portion of
the extended track offers a fresh variety of scenic vistas through the woods,
along the Esopus Creek, and ends with the return trip to Mt. Pleasant.

A BIT OF HISTORY
|
The
tracks you will be riding on are rich in history. Trains of the Ulster &
Delaware Railroad carried vital freight and tourist traffic to and from the
Catskills. Bluestone for the sidewalks of New York was quarried here and dairy
products produced on Ulster and Delaware County farms were rushed to the city by
rail.
City dwellers sought a breath of fresh air and a respite from steamy New York
City summers at the Catskills' many boarding houses and grand hotels. In 1913,
more than 676,000 passengers rode the U&D to the Catskills. In subsequent years,
the New York Central used these tracks. During the 1930s, they operated special
ski trains direct to the Simpson Ski Slope in Woodland Valley.
In later years, Penn Central offered
service on these rails, but in October 1976, after decades of declining
revenues, the last train rode on the old Ulster & Delaware tracks.
The county of Ulster purchased the railroad in 1979 with the intention of
attracting a tourist railroad.
In 1983, the Catskill Mountain Railroad was chartered to operate a tourist
passenger operation as well as freight service. The Scenic Train is the second
stage of the implementation of CMRR's long-range plan for reopening the entire
rail line to operation.
Staffed with volunteers, it is with great pride that we WELCOME YOU ABOARD.
Our
trains provide passenger service along the scenic Esopus Creek. Come ride with
us for a 12-mile round trip on our scenic train through the heart of the
beautiful Catskill Mountains. The trip also stops at the Empire State Railway
Museum located in Phoenicia's Historic 1900 Railroad Depot. Here, for a small
donation passengers can explore railroading both past and present on the
Catskill Mountain Branch Line.
