Six Tips for Using Time Wisely.....

1. Be ready when you sit down to study. Have your materials in front of you and your assignment book open.

2. Do the hardest assignment first. Save the easier ones for last.

3. If you feel sleepy or can’t concentrate, get up and take a break. Do something that makes you move (like jumping jacks, walking, or eat a healthy snack).

4. Study for a few nights before any test. Review what you learned in the morning (in the car or before class starts) to refresh your memory.

5. If you miss school for a day, try to catch up right away, but do the assignments from that day first. Then do the makeup work. Don’t get farther behind by doing the makeup work first and missing the due dates for the new work that is due.

*Check off completed work on the assignment book

*Use count down days for long term projects

*Keep a daily work folder

*Have your parents sign your daily assignment book every day

*Prioritize a “to do” list daily to keep yourself focused on accomplishing tasks in the most effective order

*Do tasks you tend to avoid first. This gets them out of the way and makes the rest of the day more enjoyable.

*Plan a week at a time. Set aside time on a weekly basis to review the upcoming week and allot time for yourself to do what you have planned.

*Write down things you need to remember for later. Cross them off when you’re done.

*When you have a list of words to choose from, cross off the words as you use them.

*Learn and use memory tricks such as using songs, rhymes, etc. to help you recall mundane or doing information that you need.

*If you are a visual leaner, use visualization to help your memory. Develop “word pictures’ of information that will help you recall it.

*Be creative or silly if it helps you remember things. Experiment with ideas that might at first seem wild-but they might work!!

*You will find maps, charts, graphs and diagrams in your textbooks. Don’t skip over them. Study them carefully because they can help you understand the subject.

*When you choose an answer for a blank line in a sentence, read the sentence to yourself with your answer choice to see if it makes sense.

*Organize homework assignments. Before beginning a homework session, number assignments in the order in which they should be done. Start with one that is not too long or difficult, but avoid saving the longest or hardest assignments for last.

*Make a special place to study. Study in the same place every night. It should be a quiet place with few distractions. All school supplies and materials should be nearby.

*Set a special study time. Make a certain time every day to reserve for studying and doing homework. The best time is usually NOT right after school. Unwind first! Eat a little snack, relax. Even if you don’t have homework, the reserved time should be used to review the day’s lessons, read for pleasure, or work on an upcoming project.

*Keep organized notebooks. This will help with review and organize your material later to prepare for tests and quizzes and future notebook turn-ins.

*Have a weekly cleanup. Sort through your desk, cubby, book bags and notebooks to find old tests and papers that should be saved, kept at home, or thrown away.

*Prepare for the next day. Before you go to bed, pack your schoolwork and books in your bookbag. Lay out clothes, shoes, socks, etc.
