Monkey Island 1 and 2

starstarnostarnostarnostar
Manufacturer: Lucas Arts

In Brief:
Mediocre games.
Puzzle Quality: varies Visuals: clunky Difficulty: hard
Dramatic Effectiveness: so-so Ease of Interface: okay

Since I didn't bother finishing either of these games, I'm not going to bother writing separate reviews for them. I've probably played about half of each one, so that should add up to one whole game.

It's hard to play older games; they don't stack up well with the newer. With it's simple, EGA-quality graphics and subtitled dialogue, it's not near the experience of something like Sam & Max Hit the Road, much less Riven: The Sequel to Myst. I loved Hugo's House of Horrors, the first graphical adventure game I ever played, but who knows what I'd think today.

So maybe years ago I would have liked this more. But it's not that pretty, not that funny, and the puzzles are okay but not that exciting. Also I got stuck in both games. My games-writing friend says Monkey Island 2 has ridiculous puzzles but that 1 is all solvable (of course, he's smarter than I am), but in both cases when I got seriously stuck in the games I not only didn't feel like expending the time and energy to push on through, I didn't even feel like finding a hint file to push me past the hump. I just stopped playing.

But maybe someday I'll get around to getting cheats for them and finish them up. When I'm bored enough.
