Citizenship Award

Background of the Award

For some years, the Star News conferred upon one citizen in New Hanover County the honor of "Citizen of the Year." The individual was honored for unselfish contributions to civic betterment during the preceding twelve months.

Among those who received this award were three members of the Wilmington Civitan Club: Louie E. Woodbury, Jr., John H. Fox, and Addison Hewlett, Jr.

When the Star-News elected to discontinue the Citizen of the Year Award, the Wilmington Civitan Club decided in 1979 to continue this important recognition through its own annual award for good citizenship. It is given to an individual who has earned this recognition through community service and activities outside of his or her profession, or for work over a period of years. This is in keeping with the Civitan motto: "Builders of Good Citizenship."
