Ireland Ancestors

Stacy Murch Arnold
I'd love to be on your list of researching the Crilley (Crilly) family. Mary Crilley (Crilly) was my second great grandmother. She was born August 15, 1840 in Drogheda Ireland and died in Illinois, USA October 24, 1942 at 102 years of age.
Her parents were Patrick Crilley 1797 - 1888 Anne Venables 1814 - 1884 and she married Michael Norris 1830 - 1875 and they had several children. I have a few listed below.
Patrick J. Norris 1861 - 1884

BESS BROOK

Our family originated from Bess-Brook, Armagh, N.Ireland around 1830's. It is believed Crilley was spelt without the 'e'. it was later added by the English!
I'm not certain, however, legend has it that after trouble with the 'black and tans' around the time of one of the many potato famines, my family eluded the British Army by hiding in Sterling Scotland before eventually settling in Newcastle, Northumberland.
Our Grandfather James Crilley often went back to Ireland to visit family but died without leaving information about the ancestory of our family. My great grandfather was Patrick Crilley. We know the family originated from Bess Brook, Ireland.

DERRY

My connection is Anna/Annie CRILLEY, spinster, no occupation, of Derry (?), daughter of Terence CRILLEY, miller, who married William SMITH, of full age, bachelor, labourer, of Gortin (?) son of James SMITH, coachman, on 2nd September, 1895 at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Tullaniskan (Newmills), Dungannon District, Co. Tyrone, witnesses Simon M. & Marget CHRISTIAN.
Places of residence of the bride and groom may (possibly) have been transposed (see census information).
Annie had a brother James CRILLEY, both families signed the Covenant in 1912, and were on the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Farlough as follows (note variations in birthplaces and ages):-

SMITH 1901
William, Head, C. of I., Read & write, 31, millworker, born Londonderry
Annie, Wife, C. of I., 36, born Tyrone
Wm. James, Son, 4, Tyrone
Florence E., Daughter, 2, Tyrone

(Given the family's naming patterns, Annie's mother may well have been Florence Elizabeth)

SMITH 1911
William, Head, 42, labourer, born?
Annie, Wife, 45, married 15 years, 2 children, both living, born L'derry
William James, Son, 14, scholar, 12, Tyrone
Florence E., Daughter, 12, Tyrone

CRILLEY (spelt CRILLY) 1901
James, Head, C. of I., Read & write, 48, heckler, born Tyrone
Sarah, Wife, 32, Down,
James, Son, 7 years 11 months, Down
Ann, Daughter, 6 yrs, 1 m., Down
Samuel, Son, 3 yrs. 10 m., Tyrone
Maria, Daughter, 1 yr. 5 m., Tyrone

CRILLEY (spelt CRILLY) 1911
James, Head, 50, general labourer, born?
Sarah Jane, 45, spinning mill worker, married 19 years, 6 children, all
living, born Tyrone
James, Son, 18, general servant, domestic, Tyrone
Anne, Daughter, 16, spinning mill worker, Tyrone
Samuel, Son, 13, scholar, Tyrone
Mary, Daughter, 11, scholar, Tyrone
Sarah Jane, Daughter, 8, scholar, Tyrone
Elizabeth. Daughter, 3, Tyrone

In 1901 there was also a Michael CRILLY, R.C., 30, Constable R.I.C. (R.U.C. perhaps?), born Tipperary and his wife MARY, 24, born Antrim, living in Coalisland on the same census.

In 1911 there was also an Annie Crilly, servant, C. of I., 16, born Down, in the home of Robert DANIEL, J.P., linen finisher, also living in Farlough.

Hope someone may find a connection. My information about my Crilley family is very limited, but I don't know of any emigration.

Jackie
Catherine Crilly born 11-7-1842 and died 10-25-1913 She married Patrick C Caherty, he was born 9-29-1845 and died 11-2-1921 Both were born in Ireland (northern) I believe and both died in US Illinois both buried in Oakwood cemetery in IL
They had 1 son that I know of Patrick Daniel Caherty. He was born 1869 ( he may had been born in Ireland or the US) and died 1950, Patrick had married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Mermagh on 2-26-1895 but she died a year later on 3-15-1896. She was born 4-13-1877 making her be 18 almost 19 yrs old when she died.

Lynn Crilly Lee

My earliest Crilly ancestor was Patrick, born c. 1797, died 1888, lived in County Louth, Ireland on a farm near Dunany Point outside of Drougheda. He married Anne Venables and had several children. Known children are Patrick, Mary, Elizabeth, Nicholas, and Maggie

Mary married Wm Norris and migrated to the USA – Illinois area

Nicholas migrated to USA, Illinois area, and married Annie Boyle late in life.

Elizabeth remained in Ireland and married (unknown) Brennan

Maggie remained in Ireland and married (unknown) Conlon

Patrick b. 1848 remained in Ireland and married Annie Gallagher. They produced ten children:

Patrick, John, Nicholas, Annie, Bridget, Mary, Peter, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Kathleen.

John, Nicholas, Bridget, Annie and Peter remained in Ireland.

John died unmarried at the age of 33.

Nicholas married and inherited the family farm. He had ( ) children

Annie married Margaret Penney .

Bridget married Kirwan .

Peter married Margaret Hamill

The other five children migrated at various times to USA

Patrick came in 1899 at age 17, worked in New York for a few years. He married Sarah McKee and had two children, Patrick and James. His wife died in the sixth year of his marriage and he brought the children to Ireland where they were raised by his parents. He came back to the US, married Roseann Maguire, and produced five more children: Thomas, Mary, Kathleen, Bernard, and Veronica. They farmed in Iowa, and later Illinois.

Mary migrated to NY. She married Peter McQuillon. They had several children

Elizabeth, called Lily, married Gerald Barton in Ireland. They had one child, Maura, who married Bernard Darby. Maura died before having childen. Lily lived in New York, and died at the age of 103

Kathleen and Thomas came to this country together in 1920. Thomas married Irene Sims and farmed in Illinois. They had four children.

Kathleen lived in New York. She married Thomas O´Hare and had one son, Edward.

I am the daughter of the fourth Patrick, (raised by his grandparents in Ireland). I have some information on the descendants of most of these people in both US and Ireland. Family members are now too numerous to mention. Will be happy to share if anyone thinks there is a connection.

Rachael

They had at least 5 known children, the earliest birthdate accounted for being 1822. Their children were Mary, Sara, John, Rachael, and Joseph. Rachael wed Peter McGlone. Joseph [my gggrandfather] wed Mary McElhone of Knockadoo, Lissan, Tyrone.

The earliest data is the Christianing of Jacobus Crilley on 25 May 1788 at Saint-Peter Roman Catholic Church in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. In attendance were his father, Jacobi Crilley, and mother, Annae.

The next is a record of death of William Crilley in June 1797 of Limerick.

The third is the marriage of James Crilley to Elizabeth Perkins at St. Martins in the Fields, London, England on 06 Dec.1806.

Starting with Charles Phillip Crilley, my great-grandfather, who married Sarah Anne Brunt 09 May 1863 at St. Peter and St.Pauls Church, Aston Juxta Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
I have received from the Family History Library a copy of the certificate listing my GGGF as Francis Crilley who attended the wedding.

1861 Census. Their civil parish is Aston in the county of Warwickshire, England. My great grandfather is Charles Crilley born about 1841 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. The others are his father, Francis Crilley, Ireland 1811,his mother Eliza Crilley(nee Kelly), Ireland 1819, Francis`s sister(?), Bridget Crilley, Ireland 1828, daughters Bridget,1854, Eliza 1842, Hannah 1845, Mary 1853 and sons John 1848, Thomas 1850 all born in Birmingham, Warwickshire,
There known descendants are as follows:

    (1) Thomas Crilley born 1867 married Florence Shellis
     (2) Their children:
Dennis, Hubert, Francis Howard, Norah, and Charles born between 1890 and
1910.
(3) Terence Michael and Patricia Mary(Dennis)
(4) Ronald amd Peter(Hubert)
(5) Dennis and Maureen(Francis Howard)
(6) Yvonne eileen(Norah)

1871. census Researching the 1871 England Census, and listed as living in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England are the great-grandparents of Dennis, Terence, Pat, Maureen, Ronald and Peter Crilley and Yvonne Eilleen Sandford. Living with Charles and Sarah Ann Crilly, are their children, Catherine (1864), Francis (1866), and Thomas (1870), our grandfather. Up till now, we were unaware that Thomas had a brother and sister. Now, the descendants of his brother and sister will have to be researched
Dennis Crilley, was present at the marriage of his son, Francis Crilley, 30, to Eliza Kelly, 19, on 02 Nov. 1839 at St. James church, Bristol, Gloucesshire, England. Dennis was a miller by trade, and Francis was a commercial traveller. All three were born in Ireland, county unknown.
Frances is the father of Charles Philip Crilley who married Sarah Anne Brunt in Birmingham, England in 1863 at the church of St.Peter and St. Pauls Church, They were the parents of Thomas Charles Crilley born around 1874 who emigrated to Canada in 1927.

I have found Crilleys, Jacobus and Jacobi, living in Birmingham as early as 1780. Also a James Crilley in London married at St.Martin in the Fields around 1820. Now however, I have a good lead in Ireland. There are many Crilleys buried at St.Peters RC church in Warrenpoint, County Down, N. Ireland.

My father, Francis Howard, was born in Kidderminster, England, lived in Wolverhampton, England, and moved to Montreal Canada where I now reside just outside in Pointe-Claire Quebec.

Paul Crilley Originally my grandfather, John Crilley came across from Ireland at the early part of this century. He married a Scot who maiden name was McAllister. He had a brother, who we assume came across with him, called Peter, who was killed in action in France during the WWI. My father was named after him. The family lived at Carlisle which is close to the English-Scots border. I have 3 sisters (Rosemary, Elizabeth, and Monica and a brother called Peter, named after my father.

I would like to learn more about the connections with our names and I feel certain that they are all linked to the same family in Ireland. I am also keen to research our family in Northern Ireland since the end of the troubles it is safe to visit. Let me know how I can help. Paul Crilley (Andy-Blackburn@silverscreen.demon.co.uk)

Crilley descendant in Yorkshire, England, researching the family history. My great, great grandfather was John Crilley from Belfast, Ireland - served unwillingly (was press-ganged)in the British navy around 1842. Jumped ship at Sierra Leone where the trail goes cold. Would be very grateful to receive any other Crilley family details, especially earlier than 1842.

Family lives in Liverpool area of England. Working with us, but doesn't know many ancestor names.

Dan

Father traced line back to 1840 County Derry. Grandparents had moved from
Ireland for grandad to work in the Tyneside coalmines around 1905. Father
also worked in mines and then trained as chef in London.
Aunt used to talk about relatives who went to Baltimore in early 1900's.

Australia

Peter Crilley In 1850 the four brothers O'riley bombed the Dublin Police Station and fled to Boston. Fearing extradition if they were caught they changed their surname by rearranging O'riley to Crilley. One brother drifted to California in search of gold and then, upon hearing of the gold rush in the state of Victoria in Australia in 1854, took passage. Apparently we stem from this man. There's not many of us in Australia, and Crilley is also spelled without the "e" - Crilly, in some phone books. We are of Irish Catholic stock - my grandfather got work on the Sydney waterfront during the Depression because the 'Irish Mafia' ran it. My name is Peter James Crilley born 1954 in Sydney Australia; My father was Reginald James born 1920 in Sydney; and his father was Patrick. What's left of my family don't know our history - but I'll share this tale with you.

I was born in Washington, Co.Durham, England. My family originates from the catholic Crilley family in Bess-Brook, Armagh, N.Ireland.
I'm not certain, however, legend has it that after trouble with the 'black and tans' around the time of one of the many potato famines, my family eluded the British Army by hiding in Sterling Scotland before eventually settling in Newcastle, Northumberland.
I have little knowledge of family history, however the family strain spelt Crill 'e' y, not Crilly is supposed to be directly related part of the Irish family, with many brothers who scattered to USA and UK during the time of problems. The extra 'e' was placed into the name after a feud within the family. It appears according to my distant relations that any Crilley (with the 'e') derive from the same family household of brothers.

Mary Stewart Kyritsis I received an application for a Social Security number for the above person who isn't the one I was hoping for.
Clare Crilley McMullen lived at 89 Seaman Avenue in NYC, b. 1 Nov 1904 in Boston, MA, parents Francis CRILLEY and Susie CONNELL. The application is dated 15 June 1937. If anyone would like this, let me know, I'd be happy to mail it out.

I'm looking for different Crilleys -- My grandfather, Francis Crilley, came from Ireland to Boston -- he was born in 1852. He married Susie Connell (b. 1863), also an Irish immigrant, and they gave birth to 5 children -- two, Mary Theresa and Christine, died in childbirth -- the eldest Frank married Frances Claffey and moved to Washington, raising one son - Francis J. Crilley, Jr -- now a retired eye surgeon and the father of seven grown children.
John Crilley, the next eldest died in medical school and the baby of the family, Clara Mary Rita Crilley, is my mother, She married John W. McMullen, moving to New York City. She had two sons, Robert McMullen, born in 1923, and yours truly, John F. McMullen, born in 1939.
I am related in some way to the Frank Crilley, the diver link -- he was always referred to as a cousin and, for a while, my aunt had his medal. I'm also related, in same way, Father Michael Crilley, a Josephite priest from the Baltimore area (I suspect he is long dead).
I wish to find what the connection with these branches is -- I suspect it goes back to Ireland .. my grandfather, Frank Crilley, died when my mother was 11 so I know little about him. I know that my mother had cousins in the Boston area named Dunbar -- Jimmy & Mary. Mary married a Pat Rooney and lived in Nahant, MA.

Joseph (Joe) Crilley

I am the son of Frank William Crilley. My father's father was also Frank William Crilley - the Navy diver who won the Congressional Medal of Honor -1915. Medal of Honor Museum or search for "Medal of Honor Museum" and look at the listings for the interim (peacetime) period of 1915. (New Jersey)
Photos and story of Frank William Crilley
Frank William Crilley was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on 13 September 1883. Following enlistment in the Navy in March 1900, he became a Gunner's Mate and received additional training as a diver. In 1915, while a Chief Gunner's Mate, he made dives to over 300 feet during salvage operations on the sunken submarine F-4 (SS-23) off Honolulu, Hawaii. On 17 April 1915 he rescued a fellow diver who had become entangled at a depth of 250 feet. For his heroism on this occasion, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1929.

Trenton birth records for Frank W Crilley name Frank P. Crilley (d.1905 in Philadelphia)and Mary Carrol (died prior to 1894) as his mother. Records for St Michael's orphan Asylum in Trenton area where my great grandfather was a resident in 1900 (Thomas was Frank W Sr's brother). Christa Crilley McConaghy christamcconaghy@yahoo.com

"It is extremely difficult to describe Chicago's ultimate obligations to such men as Daniel Francis Crilly, to those who for forty or fifty years have shown by their investments in real estate and their continuous development of business and residence property that their faith in the city has never wavered. The bedrock confidence of such men is infectious and indirectly inspires the people with a firm faith in the moral stability of Chicago, so that all classes come to know that, all in all, there is no better place in which to live and rear a family than this much maligned city. Such energetic and practical men as Mr. Crilly build even better than they know. He learned the building trade as a young man in Iowa City, Iowa, then moved to Chicago. He became one of Chicago's pioneer Builder/developers. He was responsible for a number of large office and residential developments in Chicago's Loop district, and built much of what is now "Old Town" Chicago. Several buildings are still named after his children. He became President of the Park Commission after the huge Chicago fire, was a 33rd degree Mason, and member of Plymouth Church and the Union League Club.

I'm second generation celtic. My paternal grandparents came to America in the early 20's [I believe]. Gran's maiden name was McGurk [Mary Brigid].
Arriving from Glasgow to Pawtucket, Rhode Island because of family or friends there. John Patrick Crilley [my grandfather] was a boxer & later bricklayer. Died at 56 from lung cancer. Had a brother Patrick, who never married but family legend has it he was a wonderful soccer player.
I really don't know much about the Crilleys in Scotland. My father has first cousins from Scotland last name Kirk, but I believe they're on his mother's side.
