timekpr Gazette

October 3, 2009

It's been quite some time since I updated this page.  There's been no developement activity in a long time.  I hope Even have something exciting in store soon.  I'm egar to see some new features to go along with the upcoming release of Krmic Koala which I happen to be using to write this entry.

Nothing new (rgarding program updates) with timekpr. I did however update the main page with more current repository addresses. Please use the new addresses in place of the older Intrepid repositories.

13 seems to be the lucky number for timekpr. Today Even released version 0.3.0 with support for Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04) and included a few tweaks and bug fixes. Have a look at the change log posted below.

Changelog for version 0.3.0:

If you want to install/update please add one of the PPAs from my previous post or get timekpr from the download page.

It's been a few days since my last report, and all I can say is WOW! The b6 version of timekpr is nothing short of fantastic. You need to check out the green lock in the notification area for unrestricted users. You should also notice that the countdown notification for unlocked users no longer appears (as it should be). Version b6 has so many tweaks that you MUST grab this version. I'll be back in a few days and I expect many more happy surprises by that time. Hang on to your hat and enjoy the ride...  :-)

As quick as I filed the bug report below, Even fixed it. I noticed a few other minor bugs were filed on the new version and fixes for them have already been committed. All I can say is keep up the good work Even

Toady I had to rebuild one of the systems in my house. It was one that the kids use extensively so of course timekpr is normally installed on that system. I took the opportunity to upgrade that system to Intrepid Ibex after installing a new HDD, and wireless adapter. Enough of the small talk, here's the news.

I downloaded and installed timekpr b5 and all was well. I then decided to add the Intrepid repository from Even's PPA and to my surprise there were updates for timekpr. I installed the updates and I now have b5+ installed on that system and it's working beautifully.

I filed a bug report against timekpr today. I found that when you are logged in as an administrator or as an unrestricted user, the timekpr status keeper gives a countdown to log off (midnight). I feel like this shouldn't be the case for any unrestricted users. timekpr should simply report No Restrictions or some such phrase, so a new bug report was filed.

Not much to report today, a few bugs were found in the Xfce operation but Even is busy knocking the down as they get reported.
The current deb file doesn't seem to be pulling in all the dependencies for Xbuntu but that should be easy to cure. I'm looking for a new deb to be released already since many bug fixes have been committed to the main trunk. I feel guilty that I haven't had much time to be a primary tester lately but I'll make it up soon. I'll keep everyone posted as new developments occur.

This evening, Even released a new rendition of the b3 build. Great news for all, because timekpr now supports Gnome, KDE, Xfce desktops for Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xbuntu 8.04 & 8.10. The main page has been updated and so has the Ubuntu forums pages and instructions. I will update the blog(s) and refine the instructions in a few days. Good work Even, we all appreciate it.

I've been out of the loop for a while. I was called out of town for my work and by the time I returned I was very sick with pneumonia. So no testing has been going on at my place. On a good note however, many new people have really been contributing to the testing of timekpr and many bugs were squished. It's nearly ready for KDE and Xfce is just around the corner. Even has been putting in countless hours as indicated by all the code commits he's been doing. When Even gives the word, that a new version is ready to be released at large, I will test the Gnome version on Intrepid vigorously and post the link once it passes muster. I think it's almost there now.

There's not much more I can add today except to say hang in there, and I'll let you know when it's ready for prime time usage. On a side note, if this paged doesn't render correctly or if you find some odd formatting let me know. I have upgraded my main system to Ubuntu 8.10 and Kompozer for Linux no longer works on this version. I'm using the Windows version of Kompozer under wine. The last time I tried this my results were less than perfect.

I was just about to install the deb file from above when my email notified me of a new forum entry. It seems that this deb is already producing some notable problems and Even have already started addressing them. I think I'll wait until tomorrow before I begin testing.

I'm glad to report that others on the forum are now helping with the testing of timekpr, and finding some of the issues very cleverly I must say. I don't think that my absence for a day or two will make much impact. This will afford me some time to take my final exams on one of my courses of study (which I completed mostly today). Tomorrow will be a good day to dig in. Even's new deb will have received some testing from one of the forum members, some issues will have been resolved, and perhaps a workable package with minor quirks is all I'll be dealing with. That would be great. I'll check in after I've done some testing myself.

Today - Even repackaged timekpr into v. b3 - There was a bug discovered in b2 that prevented user from being kicked if "Limit Duration" has never been used. This is because a conf file is needed to store the limit values and if a limited user has only been limited by "Time Frame", the conf file was never generated. b3 corrects the problem by having "Time Frame" generate the conf file if one is not already present.

Also, this release is the first testing version for the KDE and Xfce desktops. I plan to install Kubuntu and Xbuntu this weekend to help with testing. That should be interesting.  If anyone else cares to jump in and wants to test, here's a direct link to version b3  is located on Even's server. Grab it and have fun. Be sure to report your test results on launchpad.

I did a Google search of timekpr today and found so many hits to our project it stagers the mind. It seems that Ubuntu and other Linux users world wide are in love with timekpr. There were too many different languages for me to read them all, but generally speaking timekpr is a very desired package. When I asked for help in the Ubuntu Forums, I didn't realize how quickly and to what extent this project would grow. Open source is such a wonderful thing these days. I wish I had jumped on the bandwagon a long time ago.
