In
the modern jazz world
where it has become crowded with great players (thankfully) - it
has also
become harder as an artist to distinguish one's self above the fray.
Tenor
saxophonist / flautist Lew Tabackin
has managed through many years of dedication to not only carve out
a personal style, but through his sheer passion and virtuosity
he has
vanquished any potential imitators. One of the very few jazz artists
that have
made the flute into a full fledged jazz "horn" , Lew's playing is blue and moody. His use of his
knowledge
of Japenese music - its unique scales and feel, draw you in to a deeper
level. His tenor playing is robust, drawing its strength from the
lineage
of the likes of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. And its no coincidence
that his
current group - a trio with bassist Boris Koslov and drummer Mark
Taylor - was
an instrumentation pioneered by Sonny Rollins. To front a group
without
the benefit of a chordal instrument requires not only a level of
musicianship
in the virtuoso range, but guts - jazz guts. Whether Lew
Tabackin's trio plays take-no-prisoners swing/bop standards, pretty ballads, or
original
compositions the listener is guarenteed a performance to remember.
We are absolutely delighted to host this
world class
artist.
