SOLOIST COMPETITION

Each year high school band, choral, orchestra and jazz ensemble directors throughout the Fox Valley region  are invited to submit student nominations for the annual Fox Jazz Fest jazz improvisation competition. Sponsored by the Jazz Corner Society and Heid Music, the outstanding soloists are chosen by a panel of area jazz professionals. The first place winner is featured and will perform at the Fox Jazz Festival with a professional rhythm section. Winners will also receive gift certificates to Heid Music in the amounts of $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place, with the high school band program represented by the winners also receiving a matching monetary award. Please click here to read and download the application and guidelines and note the entry deadline of April 15, 2012.

The winners of the 2011 Fox Jazz Fest Jazz Improvisation Competition were drummer, vibist, and guitarist Frankie Salerno of DePere High School, first place, and clarinetist David Arguello of Omro High School, second place. Third place winner was violinist Ian Schuh of Appleton West and the Renaissance School of the Arts.

GUEST ARTIST CLINIC

We are very excited to announce that our Saturday headliner, Donny McCaslin and group will host a clinic for Fox Valley jazz students as part of this year's festival. Although the clinic is aimed to provide an enriching and educational experience for area jazz students, it is free and open to the entire public.  All are welcome!  McCaslin’s clinic will take place in the band room at Seton Catholic Middle School in Menasha, WI at 9:30am on Saturday, September 1, 2012. Please check your calendars and make plans to attend!

This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

It is the hope of the Jazz Corner Society and the Fox Jazz Festival Planning Committee to make artist clinics and workshops an annual event that will continue to enrich the festival experience for jazz students, performing musicians, and educators in the area.
