Weather Window

     

The Weather Window makes a great addition to your computer desktop and helps you keep an eye on the weather. The 'window' graphic in the center of the display gives an indication of the current weather conditions. The display is updated every 20 minutes, and the window graphic shows a different view depending on whether it is day (7am to 7pm) or night.

Enter your zip code, postal code, city and state, or city and country into the configuration file, wwconfig. The configuration file also requires a free license key from the weather data provider, World Weather Online. Detailed instructions are provided in the release notes.

Weather Window output defaults to the scales used in the US. If you prefer metric values, simply check the 'Metric' box in the lower right of the output window.

As noted above, the weather data is updated every 20 minutes. A counter in the lower right tells the time to the next update in 30-second units. Therefore, a value of 12 means that the data will update in six minutes.

While the Weather Window does not require a home automation system to be present, the program is the perfect companion to the HAL2000 system by Home Automated Living. During each data update, the program writes a set of text files that may be read by HAL:

• now.txt = The current temperature and sky conditions
• winds.txt = Current wind direction and speed
• humid.txt = Current humidity reading in percent
• baro.txt = Barometric pressure and rising/falling indication
• today.txt = Weather forecast for today
• tomorrow.txt = Weather forecast for tomorrow

The output values for temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure are followed by one of the following:

• up arrow = rising
• equal sign = steady
• down arrow = falling

The small box in the lower right corner is also used to display error indications. If an error is displayed, check the configuration file for a proper town/city name or postal code.
