CENTRAL TEXAS COLLEGE FACULTY SENATE MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING November 15, 2002 9:00 a.m. Building 113, Room 106
Present: Officers: Jan Anderson (President), Suzanne Morales (President-elect), Rhonda Mize Sullivan (Treasurer), Delores Williams (Secretary). Faculty: 47 present.
Call to Order President Jan Anderson called the meeting to order at 9:02 a.m.
Approval of Minutes Bob Chaney moved that we accept the October 18th minutes as printed on the web-site. Jerri Cleaver seconded the motion. Motion carried.

She stated that three outstanding bills from the past two years were discovered and they are currently being investigated.
GuestsLeo Welsh, Director Human Resource Management, was introduced. Accompanying him were Ilene Ledet, Liz Helbing, Benefits Director; RoseAnn Hayes, Ass’t. Director, Pension Plan; and Darrell Edwards, Coordinator, Risk Management. Topics addressed were the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 and Policy 390; short term and long term disability, supplemental insurance, liability insurance, travel, and retirement benefits and pay. Gordon Carmichael asked about the problem of Social Security being cut just as the presentation time ended. Jan Anderson asked that RoseAnn Hayes call him and investigate the problems and report back to Faculty Senate in January.
Standing and Special Committee Reports: Piper Professor: No report. Faculty Affairs: Suzanne Morales reported the committee has met three times and is working on the following issues: improved communication, adjunct benefits, registration, and evaluation. The Planetarium will have a room for adjunct faculty. The committee is pursuing educational benefits for adjunct faculty, an improved registration process for faculty (ideas are welcomed), and changes to the evaluation tool to include areas, such as the bookstore and cafeteria, servicing the students. The feedback is requested to make improvements. Faculty evaluation changes include adding six questions where students evaluate themselves. Questions were clarified. No two similar courses will be evaluated. Faculty may select one of the courses to be evaluated by notifying Dr. Julie Thomas. The second course will be randomly selected. Ms. Morales then presented the format for compiling the data: the mean, trimmed mean, and median. Ms. Morales then moved to use a 5% trimmed mean in the faculty evaluation compilation. John Frith seconded the motion. Discussion ensued resulting in a substitute motion to table the issue by Jack Van Doren. The motion was seconded by Jeri Cleaver. The substitute motion to table the first motion carried with 10 in opposition. Professional Development: Gordon Bacon reported Melissa Richardson had a boy and Christina Michura is at a speech contest. He encouraged everyone to continue to fill out the PD forms and forward them to Caroline Dakin, Coordinator, Employee Training. Nominating Committee: Will meet in January. By-Laws: Will be meeting before the end of the semester.
Old Business: Peer Appreciation Banquet: The banquet is scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2003, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CTC. The theme is “Sinatra at CTC”. The menu selection is grilled fish, chicken marsala, or vegetarian. Tickets are $15.00 and will be on sale Jan. 24. Award criteria and nomination forms were distributed. Ms. Morales requested three volunteers to form the award selection committee which will meet after the Feb. 28th Faculty Senate meeting. Gordon Carmichael, Mickey Simpson, and Kim Lacy volunteered. CTC Holiday Party: Food station volunteers Gordon Carmichael and Christina Michura are involved and additional assistance is needed. By consensus, everyone agreed to work in conjunction with API. Additionally, 15 people are needed to set up the Convention Center on December 13 (party date due to an evening engagement on the 12th at the KCC). Kristin Latour and Erin Latona volunteered.
New Business: Surveys - Distance Learning Issues: The Executive Board wishes to keep the lines of communication open between the faculty and the administration. President Anderson asked that faculty submit their issues and be specific and also communicate via the chat line. The Dec. 6 workshop is to discuss on-line issues and those planning to attend were requested to sign up in order to reserve a room to accommodate everyone. Suggestions for Graduation Speaker: President Anderson requested members submit names for graduation speaker to her after the meeting.
Announcements/Kudos: Joe Hogan made an announcement for Jerry Herrick. There will be a meeting Wednesday to hear Executive Director Virginia Carmichael of the Institute for Humanities at Salado regarding establishing a formal relationship with the CTC faculty and to sponsor programs on campus. They are seeking faculty members for advising and topic recommendations.
Gordon Bacon announced that the Infant and Toddler class helped design and review “A Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy Children.” The calendar (in English and Spanish) covers from birth to age five and is full of things parents need to know.
Shirley Robertson announced that Debra Mahar-Garcia gave birth to twin boys.
John Frith reported the Students in Free Enterprise successfully completed a forty hour project at Nolan Middle School. Two students are at Reeces Creek teaching today. SIFE have also been successful in their fund raising projects. They are currently selling vacation raffle tickets for $2.00 for 3 days and 2 nights at quality hotels in major cities anywhere in the country. Dec. 5 is the ticket deadline.
Sandy Thomason praised Cindy Wesso for her inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for 2002 and for her published power point presentation for Linton’s Introductory Medical-Surgical Nursing.
Herb Maglietta was also included in the 2002 Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
The International Students are holding a raffle this week in the Student Center to raise money for their Christmas Party.
Rhonda Sullivan thanked everyone for the Halloween candy donations. One hundred packages have been sent to NTC and 36 packages will be sent to Louisiana in December.
The next meeting will be held at 9 a.m. on January 24, 2003 in Building 113, Room 106. Ben Wickersham, Deputy Chancellor Educational Program and Support Services and Laurelyn Carlisle, Dean, Instructional Services, will speak on the upcoming SACS visit.
Joe Hogan was the winner of the Olive Garden tickets and Kristina Latour won the prize for bringing a new member, Erin Latona.
