Dukehaven Cattery

Dukehaven is a small cattery based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
We breed Maine Coon cats as a family activity.  Kittens are raised in our home.  One litter per year per female is our goal.

We breed Maine Coons, in order of priority, for:

Health we test hearts and hips, are careful with our animal husbandry and breeding program
Disposition sweet-natured & friendly
Conformation to Maine Coon breed standards
showing our cats keeps us in synch with what it means to be a Maine Coon
Color and look
we especially like the feral look, and have an interest in old lines

We do our best to raise our kittens to be healthy, happy, well-socialized Mainiacs ready to continue their lives in their new homes with confidence.

Dukehaven News

Aug 31 update

Sweet Mystique (daughter of Artemis and Ranger) went to her new home with Gay & John in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago.  Thanks to others who inquired about her and apologies for not taking her info off the website sooner.  Thanks to Ann Brna for the picture of Mystique.

Yesterday Dukehaven Luthien of Tremethick went to her new home with Bonnie Pearson.  Bonnie & I are both excited - Lu has great type, very solid body and wonderful pattern like her dad, Ranger, and a cuddly disposition like her mother, Giada.  This is a picture of her at 12 weeks.

Regarding news of cats here at Dukehaven, we are happy to report a good result on Dukehaven Tayla's hip screening.  Tayla's page will be coming soon but in the meantime here is a recent picture.  She and Ranger are scheduled for echocardiograms in early October.  Many thanks to Jennifer Sable & Jean Thompson of Broadsway for the breeding of Tayla's mom (Artemis) to Tayla's dad, RW, SGC Broadsway Billings.

Look for Dukehaven Tesla Magia in the showhall this fall and winter.  She is Luthien's sister and a long, typey girl with great muzzle, ears, and pattern and a playful purrsonality.  Many thanks to Donna Hinton (Nascat) and Elaine Hawksworth-Weitz  and Fred Weitz (SmokeyCoons) for their friendship and willingness to entrust us with Tesla's parents, Ranger and Giada.

And finally, we're excited to announce that Angel Fire and Ranger are expecting new coonlets in mid-October.  We'll get red or red silver boys and brown or silver patched/torbie girls from this breeding, either with or without white and either classic or mackerel patterns.  fyi, we don't reserve kittens prior to their birth but you're welcome to let me know if you have interest.  They'll be old enough to go to their new homes in early 2009.

June 30 update

Giada x Ranger's kittens were all brown tabbies, one boy and three girls.  We nicknamed them impish names (being they were born on April 1): Pixie, Nymph, Rumplestiltskin, and Vala del Mar.  Rumple (now named Teddy) has gone to his new home in Raleigh.  Nymph (now Hope) and Saavik (10 mo old spay) are headed to their new home in Charlotte later this week.  More news on Vala and Pixie to come...

April 30 update

On Jan 30, Artemis & Ranger had a litter of 5 (3 boys, 2 girls).  All kittens from this litter are either going to new homes soon or already placed (except for the brown mackerel female, Mystique - we are evaluating her for our breeding program).

And finally, Angel Fire's hips and heart were checked and fortunately both tested normal.  We plan to breed Angel Fire in the next few months.

Jan 25 update
Ranger was tested for heart and hips this month - fortunately both tested normal.

New Year's (and subsequent) pictures from Dukehaven friends are posted on a new page, Greener Pastures

Dec 6 update I'm pleased to announce that our wonderful SmokeyCoons girl, Giada, has a thumbs up from both her echocardiogram and hip x-ray.  She also achieved Grand Champion status in TICA and is working toward her Grand in CFA too.  The word, Giada, means jade in Italian - what an elegant jewel she is.

Nov 6 update All of our Artemis x Billings kittens are reserved.  All three boys will be living within a short distance of us.  At this time, both girls will be staying at Dukehaven - introducing Dukehaven Saavik (brown mackerel tabby, below left) and Dukehaven Tayla (brown classic torbie, right).  Many thanks to Jean Thompson and Jennifer Sable - Broadsway Billings and Dukehaven Artemis produced five beautiful, sweet kittens.

Sept 11 update  We are very pleased to announce a new litter of 5 kittens from Dukehaven Artemis and Broadsway Billings, born Aug 28.  We have a brown tabby and 2 red tabby males, a torbie and brown tabby female, all without white.

Aug 15 update We are very pleased and honored to introduce our newest outcross kitten, Nascat Ranger of Dukehaven.  Thank you, Donna Hinton, Nascat, for entrusting us with this very wonderful boy.

Amelia has a great new home, thanks to Mark & Jennifer in Durham.  She is greatly missed, but we know she's very well loved and cared for.  After just one day, Mark & Jennifer have become Amelia's new best friends.  What a nice match between cat and new family.

June 30: Amelia's and Santa Fe's kittens were born on May 10 - two boys and a girl.  The delivery went fine but sadly, Amelia contracted metritis and had to be spayed the following day.

May 2007:  Gandalf became a Grand Premier at the Richmond, VA show in late April.  Way to go, Gandalf!

Ownership of Tabbyskins Santa Fe returned to Willowplace recently.  Thanks to Barbara Ray for placing your trust in us.

March 2007:  We  welcomed a new kitten, SmokeyCoons Giada of Dukehaven, out of RW, SGC (TICA) & GC, RW (CFA) SmokeyCoons Alejandro and CH Wistariantale Amore of SmokeyCoons.   We are honored and grateful to Elaine and Fred Weitz, SmokeyCoons, for entrusting Giada to us, and look forward to her show and breeding career at Dukehaven.

Nov 2006: After almost a year(!) our website has been updated.  What can I say, except we've been busy (see news below) and haven't had kittens available anyway, so other tasks took priority.

Spring and Summer 2006: I contributed to the health articles for the Scratch Sheet, MCBFA's newsletter.  I edited the first article, which was about FIP, and wrote the second on vaccination protocols.  (You can get current and back issues of the Scratch Sheet when you join MCBFA.  The Scratch Sheet has lots of stories, pictures, news, and health topics about Maine Coon cats.)

May 2006: Good and sad news - Duchess delivered 3 kittens, but only one survived.  Duchess lost most of her milk a few days later.  Especially after hand feeding this baby, we're thrilled she turned out so nice, both in type and personality.  We're pleased to introduce our newest female, Dukehaven Artemis, into our breeding program.

April - May 2006: The unfinished space above our garage and shop was made into a cattery.  Many thanks to Chris Moder, contractor, for an excellent job (and on time too!).  Pictures here

March 2006: Rocquoone Amelia became a Dukehaven cat.  And what a cat she is!  Many thanks to Traci Jones for this lovely and engaging girl.

Nov 2005:  Our big news is that Tabbyskins Santa Fe of Willowplace became a Dukehaven cat in mid-November.  Thanks, Barbara Ray, for your faith in us with this beautiful, sweet boy - what a wonderful outcross.  He's sired some wonderful kittens with Duchess and we look forward to more litters from them in future.

April 2005: Sad news, Tatiana had a failed pregnancy and no kittens resulted.  We have reluctantly decided to spay her and she is recovering well.  We plan to breed Duchess again in the next few months.

Aug 2004: Dukehaven Gandalf became a champion at his first show as an adult.

We hope you enjoy our website!  We'd love to hear from you if you have an interest in Maine Coons and have a comment or question.
