Focus on Fusion

What is the future of fusion?  Will it provide a huge supply of energy for this earth?  How soon could that happen, if at all?

Early questions about the nature of matter started the study we term physics.  From Aristotle to physicists at Fermi Lab, such questioning is an important part of the history of physics! Use the links to progress from the very beginning of atomic history to the present!.

The mass of every stable nucleus is less than the sum of the individual parts that make up the atom.  So, if two protons and two neutrons were forced to come together to form a helium nucleus, then there would be a loss of mass.  This mass is released as a large amount of energy.

When the first atomic bomb exploded a new era began.  An amazing amount of energy was released.  As a weapon, the atomic bomb was deadly.  As a source of energy for electrical power, benefits are apparent but not without drawbacks.
