Our breeders live
in the Roller cages, which keeps them
relatively free
from mites and lice. It also helps keep their feet clean.
They each have a nesting box, where the hens can lay their eggs.
There is generally a pair per cage. |
 |
Our chicks have
several areas where they live, depending on
their age
and requirements. The youngest live in a box with a heat lamp
(controlled by a dimmer) attached near the top. There is often
some sort of covering on the box - either to keep the heat or the
chicks in. |
 |
After the box, the
chicks are moved to a tub in our garage.
This, too, has a heat lamp (again
controlled by a dimmer) but the lamp may be on or off (especially
towards
the summer), depending on the temperature the chicks need. The
tub is much roomier and can accomodate more growing chicks. The
tub is always kept covered, as at this stage, the chicks are always
trying to fly out and explore (though they never go very far). |
 |
After the tub, we
move the chicks to one of the open Roller
cages or,
if there are none, we move them to the PetPorter. |
