Rancho Rosita

Our Breeders

Note to the curious: Perhaps you've noticed how I name my birds? The Greg Romer line is named after animals (Rhino, Giraffe, Froggy, Puma), those descended from Sam Whiteside are named after food (Ruffles, Cheerio, and Chex) and the Kutch/ unknown line are French (Louis, Battre, Vagir, Vaciller). The babies are named based on their sire's lineage.

Cheerio
Cheerio and his two ladies, Vagir and Vaciller, show lots of promise. Cheerio is the only son of Battre and Ruffles (both now sold), who displays that typical feisty d'Anver personality- he just stops short of pecking me, while pretending to be oh-so-tough and manly... chickens. Vagir and Vaciller are practically twins, except for a slight difference in coloring- Vagir is a tad darker than her sister. Both are the daughters of Cri and Pompeux (Cri is now sold). Some notes... Cheerio is too dark, while his ladies are too light (the proper term is "lemony"), so I'm hoping for the perfect color in their babies. Also, his girls are broody right now, sharing the myriad responsibilities of three very active chicks.

Rhino
Rhino and Giraffe would be the unhappiest couple if they were humans- their very names should give an idea of how unmatched they are. As it stands, however, they are chickens, and thus very satisfied with each other. An excellent breeding pair directly from Greg Romer's line of d'Anvers (the best in the country!), their babies dominate the brooder, even over the big Brahmas and fluffy Wyandottes! I'm looking forward to their doing the same in the shows...

The same goes for Froggy and Puma- excellent breeding pair, as well as being from Greg Romer. Perhaps more easily startled than the above pair, they are nevertheless very friendly, active, and curious.
