Variable Sync is a large-scale multi-channel sound distribution network utilizing the Geo-Orchestra. The Geo-Orchestra consists of multiple units called Geo-Tubes. The Geo-Orchestra network is designed to produce sound that is highly correlated with the physical environment. As an alternative to traditional background sound, the Geo-Ochestra uses patterns derived from nature. These patterns are transformed into sound and realized through the Geo-Tubes. Through the ‘sonification’ of naturally occurring patterns and environmental cycles, the Geo-Orchestra intends to transform public spaces with a more evolutionarily appropriate soundscape. Communication between Geo-Tubes is wireless and global, allowing for both local and worldwide sensing and data exchange. The first installation of the Variable Sync will link Boston, Venice, and Santa Fe.
