"This is a photo of my
dad, Archie (Larry) Bashor and his friend both flagmen at an MG race in Palm Springs
in 1954 or 1955. As the car approached the turn my dad saw the car lose control
and at the last second, he grabbed his friend and pulled him away from the car.
Unfortunately they were both hit by the back of the car and my dad suffered the
most serious injuries. He had his foot wound up by the knock-off on the wheel
and then it threw him into his friend and they both went flying through the air.
He also suffered a broken pelvis and a ruptured spleen. He was hospitalized at
Long Beach Community Hospital for almost a year while they removed shattered bones
in his foot and battled the skin and bone infections. This picture just happened
to be taken by one of the local newspapers ...
"This was just
one of many bad experiences that he endured over his full life. He was born in
1923 and died of natural causes at 74 years of age. He grew up in Bellflower,
Ca., one of his good friends was Speed Reeves (Norm Reeves). Both of them loved
fast motorcycles and use to race through Bellflower in the early sixties. Norm
Reeves would get Honda prototypes from Japan. Some of them were called Honda/Benly."
