Glossary of Acronyms, Abbreviations, and Foreign Terms (Page one)

A1-E: Designation of a Korean War era fighter-bomber aircraft. It was a single-pilot, single reciprocating engine, propeller-driven, low-wing ship which saw extensive service in Vietnam.

AC: Aircraft commander.

AF: Air Force.

AFB: Air Force Base.

AH-1G: Attack Helicopter "1G" model, or Cobra. One of the few Army names which stuck, but not exactly: the accurate Army name was "Hueycobra," and no one ever said that. They were "Cobras" or "snakes." Only three feet wide not counting the stub wings or skids, with two tandem seats, the first helicopter designed as a gunship and an excellent one. The 3/17 Cavalry was one of the first units to receive them, in Vietnam, and qualified its Cobra pilots there. Still in service are other models with a lot of improvements. In 1999, no AH-1Gs were known to still be flying.

AHC: Assault Helicopter Company. A unit with helicopters used to move troops, to include during combat assaults. In Vietnam, they contained UH-1 helicopters and some gunships for escort.

AGL: Above ground level.

AML: Airmobile, light. A designation given to certain Army military units.
