Oatmeal Fudge Squares
Oatmeal Layer
1/2 cup Oleo [margarine]
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup sifted flour
l/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups quick rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Cream shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla.
Sift in flour, soda, salt.
Stir in rolled oats and nuts
Reserve 1 cup of mixture for topping.
Press remaining mixture into greased 9" square pan.
Fudge Layer
1 6 oz package chocolate bits [chips]
1 TBS margarine
1/3 cup Borden's canned sweetened condensed milk
l/4 tsp. salt
1 cup chopped nuts
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine chocolate bits, oleo, condensed milk, salt in pan.
Place over low heat until chocolate is melted.
Remove from heat and stir in nuts and vanilla.
Press fudge mixture evenly over oatmeal mixture in pan.
Crumble and sprinkle (this is a challenge!) reserve oatmeal mixture over fudge.
Bake at 3500 for 25 minutes.
Cool and cut.
Can be made in 12 x 18 pan. Double recipe, using 1 cup nuts for fudge layer.
