The bag is made from a pattern piece copied from a Wegman's plastic grocery bag. The following pictures show the bag filled with 5 boxes of cereal and other assorted grocery items. ![]() To make a pattern cut apart the plastic bag. Cut off the fused ends at the bottom and both top handles. Spread out the tucked-in sides. Make a pattern on paper by tracing 1/2 of the bag. ![]() Place this new pattern on the fold of the fabric and pin. You will need to cut 2 pieces of the outside fabric and 2 pieces of the lining fabric. ![]() Place one outside fabric piece and one lining fabric piece right sides together. Sew the u shaped "neck" seam. Then sew the "arm" seams but leave 2 inches open at the top of the handles. You will sew the top of the handles later. Clip the curves and turn right side out. Repeat with the second set of pieces. ![]() Place the two pieces right sides together. Push the lining back and pin the outside fabric together at the handles. ![]() Keeping the lining pulled back start sewing across the outside fabric edge being careful to keep the extra fabric pulled back. Continue sewing onto the lining side until you get to the end. ![]() Push the fabric into the handles. You will then have an opening in the side of the handles. ![]() Spread out the bag with right sides together and tuck handles to the inside, out of the way. Sew the facing outside pieces and the facing lining pieces on each side. Leave the bottoms open. ![]() Turn the bag right side out with the lining to the inside. Topstitch around the "neck" and then around each "arm". The topstitching will close the openings that were left in the "arm" seam. ![]() Fold the handles in half and sew across the top of each handle. Sew along the seam so the stitching is not visible.
![]() You will now sew the bottom of the bag making a French seam. Start with the lining to the inside when making the folds in bottom. Fold each side seam in about 2 inches. ![]() With right sides to the outside, sew across the bottom of the bag making sure to catch the tucked in folds in the bottom seam. Trim the seam allowance. ![]() Turn the bag inside out. Sew across the bottom being sure to encase the seam allowance. This will make the French seam. ![]() Turn the bag, right side out and press all seams and edges. ![]() I like to make these market bags in pairs when giving them as gifts. ![]() If the fabric width/length is bigger than my pattern I leave the extra and make the bag a little larger. ![]() Some finished bags . . .
