As you can see, I am revamping the website again. The pictures came from my grandmother in emails over the past couple of years; I do not know where she found them. Sadly, for me, anyway, my grandma went home to Jesus on September 16, 2008. I have decided to dedicate this page to her, Benita Gilland.
I was able to spend some time with her the week before she died for which I am most grateful. During that time, I asked Grandpa if he had to use just one word to decribe Grandma, what would it be? Well, he cheated and said, "Love forever."
My aunts put together a Memory Board for her memorial service and I have asked that they send me what everyone wrote so I can post it here. That way, if anyone was not able to come to the service they can at least see what she meant to all of us. I have received and posted them below. If you wish to add any memory posting, please email me () and I will post them to this page.
My Grandma
My grandma read the Peanuts and B.C. comics aloud from the Sunday paper.
My grandma told stories about people on our family tree.
My grandma made the best pies and jams on hot summer days.
My grandma had me hand her the clothespins when she hung laundry when I was too small to reach the lines.
My grandma made sure I had birthday and Christmas presents even if it was just a card.
My grandma taught me to crochet and knit.
My grandma taught me to do things right, or don’t bother doing them at all.
My grandma played Tri-ominoes and cards with me.
My grandma and I put a lot of puzzles together.
My grandma knew Jesus and took me to Sunday school.
But best of all, my grandma loved me.
I miss you, Grandma.

Our Fond Memories of Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Benita

My fondest memories of my Mother are the last 5 years when we really got to know each other. We went shopping, doctor’s appointments and church together. She always looked so beautiful in her Sunday dresses. She would always call me up on Sunday morning and ask me if I was going to Church. When I told her I wasn’t feeling good, she would ask me if I was in bed and if I wasn’t she said I could go to Church. She had such a wonderful sense of humor and we had a lot of laughs. I love you Mom and will miss you forever but I know you are in a far better place now. -- Linda |
| “Grandma” was the best Mother-in-law a person could ever have. You have all heard the “Mother-in-Law jokes”. Well, I could never relate to them because of the way she treated me and the respect I had for her. If she knew we were coming over she would try to have one of my favorites (bulgar rolls or gooseberry pie). Everyone knows in her eyes I could do no wrong. If anything was wrong, it was probably Linda that did it. -- Delbert |

| Grandma has left me with a lifetime of memories that I will carry with me forever. From simple weekend stays in Redmond, to week-long adventures through Wyoming, Montana and Canada, my Grandma was always sure to entertain us kids. And, she certainly knew if I came into the kitchen to help her finish cooking one of her famous meals, it surely meant I was getting hungry. Grandma, you touched the lives of many people and none more than mine. I will miss you always and always you will guide me. -- Larry |
| Some of our fondest memories from our annual Oregon trips were made at great-grandma and great-grandpa's house. What we remember most and could always look forward to were the little things that made each trip very special; the non-stop croquet tournaments, ice cream by the slice, playing Triominoes or the most recent card game "Golf". Her laugh was contagious while playing Golf, or one of the many card games we played time and time again. That laugh is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of her and it brings a smile and a tear. We will miss her and love her always. -- Nicole, Rachel, and David |

The most memorable time for me was when Korinne and I went to Canada with Grandpa and Grandma. We got to see a lot of beautiful country while spending precious time with them. I loved playing all kinds of games with Grandma as she was so funny. She would end up beating us at any game we played even if she tried to lose. John and I will dearly miss her. -- Nancy and John |

I always appreciated how Burl and Benita accepted me into the family as one of their kids. I always liked to accuse her of cheating at card games because she always won. I also like to tease about the time because we were an hour ahead and she would fall for it every time. -- Steve, Sr. |
Breakfasts were heaven. I loved reading her encyclopedias and eating her Rhubarb pies and cobblers. She went to Church but she was never judgemental. She lived a good life but she never had expectations of anyone else. She was loving and kind to all of her grandchildren. -- Sherry |
| I remember that Grandma was always cooking homemade things and she was the best cook in the world. She always had the best family get-togethers. Grandma always made sure that everyone was taken care of before she would sit down. Grandma would always remember everyone’s birthday and you would always get a card. She will be missed. We love her. -- Stephanie |

I remember going out and hanging up clothes with great-grandma. I remember her whistle clocks and playing games with her. She went with us to see Keiko. I also remember her fat cats. I used to play in Grandma’s closet and she had lots and lots of shoes. They were all the same style but were different colors. -- Shara
Grandma always made the greatest dinners! When we went to the ocean we had so much fun with her. She helped us feed the seagulls and the fish that were on the river. -- Mike
She and grandpa took us to the Columbia River. I liked going to church with her. We wrote letters to each other. We went to the family reunion together and stayed in yurts. I liked to just sit and talk to her. I used to walk with her and help her take care of the well. I liked helping her and grandpa. -- Barb
| She made good food. I used to scare her to death when I was a baby by rocking the rocking chair so far back that she would think that it would tip over and then rock it back. She always called me Tone-Tone. One time she took us to the ocean and we went to the aquarium. She was so excited because they had just put Braille information on each of the cages. We also went to see and feed the seals. I thought I threw the fish at the seals but I hit a tourist instead. We got lots of laughs about that forever after. -- Tony | I love my grandma. I will miss her. -- Jeff |
| I remember the quilts she made us. We stayed at the beach house together and fed the fish. She always teased me and called me Christofffer. She was a good and fun grandma. I liked to help her and grandpa. -- Chris | |
| I love my grandparents so much and I will miss my grandma! The thing I remember most is her buttering me up with her good dinners and then kicking my butt afterward at Triominoes. She was a great lady who was AWESOME to all of us. -- Vance |
When Sherry, Stephanie, and Steve, Jr. were small, our home burned. There was no place for us to stay as it was reconstructed. Dad and Uncle Sig came to Utah and picked the kids and I up and brought us “home.” We had to stay several weeks and they were so kind to us. One of the Sunday’s we were there fell on Mother’s day. Early that morning I heard sounds on the steps and my mom came in the room with a tray, serving me breakfast in bed. On the day that I should have been serving her, she served me. This is just a small example of how our mom always put the needs of others above her own.
Mom and Dad accepted and loved my adopted children as much as their natural grandchildren. Mom spent many hours teaching my intellectually challenged children how to play games and then would patiently play with them for even more hours. -- Colleen
