Houck, Abraham -(A Century of Living Hartney 1882-1982)

The Houck name was spelt in many way staring out as Huygen, then Huyk and so on.
Jan Huygen born in Europe of Dutch descent, arrived in New Amsterdam (New York) on 1626. He married Elizabeth Peters in New Amsterdam.
Their son Andries Hanse Huyk, born in 1639, had ten children and the fifth son Jachem born in 1685, had a son Lodewyck . Lodewyck had a son George born 1753 who married Lena Beekman.
George fought with Wolfe at Quebec during the revolutionary war. He did suffer later, for his fidelity to the King, and was often fined on that account. He and his nine children moved to Lower Canada. The first son, Lewis married in 1800 to Mary Luke, daughter of Colonel Phillip Luke, who fought in the Revolutionary war, and in the War of 1812, and was the commissioner who arranged settlement of a large part of Lower Canada after 1780. Lewis cleared and built on land in Shefford township in Lower Canada and was dispossessed of it nineteen years later. He and his family of nine children moved, and settled in Reach township in Ontario where he died in 1859. The ninth child was Nicholas who farmed in Reach township, married Jane Elizabeth David and had seven children. Their sixth child was Abraham born in 1857 who married Kate Margaret McPhail (born in 1861) from neighboring Brock township. They moved to Winnipeg in 1881 where Abraham was a blacksmith, until they moved to a homestead at Minto, Manitoba - Canada, where their eight children were born. Mary Florence (Min) married Richard Gibson, Kate Jane married George Gibson, both of Hartney (see Gibson histories).
