No Time

Missionary Cook and his new wife, Emma Fledderjohn, left their families and friends to go to the other side of the world. Rev. Cook's first jobs were to teach English and German at Tohoku Gakuin and to learn the Japanese language. Before long he was traveling and spreading the word of God. He traveled extensively throughout Yamagata and Akita prefectures. His message was of a God of love. When he approached a town, the message was spread far and wide, "Here comes the 'Jesus Loves Me' man!" People crowded around him, eager to hear what he had to say. To his colleagues and others, he became known as the Apostle of Ryo-U.

Read the book to learn about his life and adventures.

H. H. Cook

"As I stood behind the pulpit in Yamagata Church in Japan, I was awed. Just think, my grandfather, Herman Cook, stood here about eighty-five years ago! I felt a strong connection to him."

Who was this man, Cook San? I never knew my grandfather. He died long before I was born, but maybe I have always known him - through Grandma, and especially through Mom.

My mother was born in Japan, as were her five sisters. Japan was her home for the first twelve years of her life. I grew up hoping some day I would be able to visit this land I knew so much, but yet so little about.

Finally, in 2000, my husband and I traveled to Japan for the first time. We saw things Mother had talked about. We looked at places I had only seen in family photographs. We drove up the famous Mt. Fuji as far as the road would let us. We went to some of the churches with which Grandfather had been involved. We visited in the house, in Yamagata, where the Cook family had lived. We talked with people who were indirectly influenced by Grandfather. The trip far exceeded my expectations. The more I learned, the more I realized I must write the story of H. H. Cook."
