********* 2007 UPDATE - I haven't had much time the last couple years to update this page. Please be patient, hopefully soon I can get back to Canada and get some new information! THANKS**********

I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN TO OTTAWA CANADA (October 2003)- TO THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND HAVE FOUND A CENSUS RECORD THAT SHOWS MY SEATON ANCESTORS ORIGINALLY CAME FROM ENGLAND. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY CAME TO CANADA (MONTREAL) CIRCA 1840. I WANTED TO ADD THIS TO THE WEB PAGE, BUT ALSO WANT TO VERIFY THIS WITH MORE RECORDS/INFORMATION BEFORE I ADDED IT. PLEASE BEAR WITH ME. THANKS.............

I have been researching my family tree for only about 6 years so far. I have made some exciting discoveries and have found a lot of discrepincies also. The farthest back in time I have with about 95% acuracy is about 1865 when my ancestors were in Montreal Canada. I have not located what country they originally came from which is my ultimate goal, I have a feeling it is either Scotland or England. With more research, I will update this page accordingly. Here is what I know so far.....

William John Seaton (my Great-Great Grandfather) was born around 1834, probably in either Canada or England. He married Jeannette McDowell probably around 1855-1860. They came down to the U.S. in about 1866 because their third child was born in Vermont in 1867.

Here is a list of children I believe to be their's. Their names and approximate birthdates are:

    Born in Canada
  1. William 1862 (Have not found any information on him yet)

  2. Robert 1864

    Born in Vermont

  3. Margaret (Maggie) 1867

  4. David (my Great-Grandfather) 1871

These Seatons lived in Middletown Springs, Vermont and were living there on the 1870 census. Wm. John was a tailor by trade. They must have moved to West Rutland (a few miles away)shortly after, because Wm. John Seaton died in West Rutland - 4/26/1874. Wm. John's wife - Jeannette (not sure of spelling) lived until 1903. Her grave and Wm. John's are in the Evergreen Cemetery see link in West Rutland, Vermont. Her maiden name was McDowell and she is buried by a bunch of other McDowells and Tuggeys.

After Wm. John died (at age 39), life for the rest of the family must have been tough. The children were only 12, 10, 7, and 3 years old. From Vermont census records, I've found that Maggie and Robert were child laborers. Robert and David became marble quarrymen when they became old enough. West Rutland was famous for it's marble quarries (see attached link) in the late 19th century. The family eventually moved to Fair Haven Vermont see History of Fair Haven, Vermont link (about 12 miles west). Margaret married John Bourne French on 7/21/1896 and moved to California. Robert married Minnie Manchester on 10/25/1887 and moved to Troy, NY around 1899-1900. David (my Great-Grandfather) moved to Troy, NY a couple years later around 1903. He married Minnie Manchester's sister, Frances Manchester (born 11/22/1875) on September 17, 1904 in Troy. They had 3 children, my grandfather - John Burr Seaton born 1905, Mary Louise Seaton born 1907, and Olive Seaton born about 1910. David died 11/18/1924 age 53. He is buried in Forest Park (sometimes referred to as Forest Hills) Cemetery, Troy(Brunswick) New York. I have been there and looked for the headstone, but have not found it yet. Frances moved down by Philadelphia, PA to be with her daughter (Mary L.Seaton) about 1941. Frances died 5/25/1965. Her tombstone picture is linked here along with Mary's (Mary died 11/17/1992). My Grandfather - John B. Seaton married Grace Elizabeth Thomas on April 19,1931. They had 2 children, my father - John H. Seaton Sr. on 4/27/1933 and Grace Carolyn Seaton (married Reagan) on Feb. 13, 1938. Both my grandmother (G. Elizabeth) and my aunt (G. Carolyn) use(d) their middle name and not their first name Grace. My father - John H. Seaton Sr. married Barbara Ann Ladislaw on Nov. 14, 1959. They had 2 children, Deborah Ann Seaton and myself - John H. Seaton Jr.

All 4 of my Grandparents are now deceased. William Ladislaw died 12/24/1959 - Mary Mager Ladislaw-Smith died 4/10/1985. They are buried together in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna N.Y.

John B. Seaton died 6/22/1986 - G. Elizabeth Thomas-Seaton died 7/19/2001. They are buried together in Memory's Garden, Colonie N.Y.

My family currently resides near Albany, NY.
