VOL. 113 - NO. 5 - POTSDAM, N.Y., THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1963 South Colton Accident Kills 2 Area Men The highway accident toll continued to rise in St. Lawrence County, with Potsdam contributing two deaths and three serious injuries since last week end. A one-car accident in the village of South Colton late Monday afternoon took the lives of two men, while a third man is a patient in Potsdam Hospital. His condition was listed as fair Wednesday. Alexander Stone, 66, of the South Colton section, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Potsdam Hospital. He suffered head injuries. Stone had been living in a woods camp some two miles from Colton. Louis Carrow, 55, of Butternut Ridge, Hannawa Falls, died one-half hour after he was admitted to the same hospital, with head injuries and fractured legs. Verick S. Mershaw, owner and operator of the car, was also admitted to the hospital with lacerations and bruises. All Lumberjacks According to investigating police from the Canton substation, the three men, all employed as lumberjacks, were proceeding north, with Mershaw at the wheel. As they entered the village of South Colton, the vehicle struck a culvert on the right side of the highway on Route 56, in front of St. Paul's Catholic Church. The car travelled 18 feet, struck a concrete abutment, flipped onto a lawn, and rolled over onto its top. It was completely demolished, according to reports. Stone, who was pinned beneath the car, was removed only by lifting the vehicle first. Two of the injured men were taken to the hospital in the Rescue Squad ambulance, while the third was carried in Colton Fire Department ambulance. Dr. Samuel Livingston, Madrid, county coroner, issued a verdict of accidental death in the cases of both Carrow and Stone. Colton Firemen's Emergency Unit, first at the scene, administered first aid to the injured men. Mouth-to-mouth recessitation was given to Carrow by Steve Connelly both at the scene and during the 10-mile trip to the hospital. Carrow's body was taken to Tupper Lake, where services are slated for tomorrow morning. Stone's body was removed to the Phillip's Funeral Home in Massena. |
