June 27th, 1863 -- March at daylight. It has been a little rainy since we began to march but on the whole a fine time. Came in sight of the Potomac at one o'clock. We cross about two hours after on Pontoons--go by the CAmp of the 1st VT. Brigade. Saw Ward Hurlburt again. We are in Maryland now. I hope that I will see Virginia no more. Went two or three miles farther & camped. Cloudy & cool.

28th -- Fine weather for marching and we improved it too. Hard.

29th -- Another hard march. Went through Frederick to day--11 or 12 died out of the Brigade to day it is said, but guess it is false.

30th -- The last of June. Had a good supper last night but we can have no more for it isn't "orders". We camped last night 6 miles north of Frederick & marched from there to this place Emettsburgh, a few miles from the Pennsylvania line. A number of men fell out yesterday & today it is hard marching & if we don't rest I'll fall out tomorrow for I cannot stand it.

July 1st -- Thought we were to lie still to day but about 8 we had orders to march. I washed myself, changed my shirt, threw away my old one so it makes my load only a Rubber & Fly tent & pr. socks, but it is enough. This P.M. marched for Gettysburgh, heard firing & saw the smoke--guess the village is burnt. Halted a mile or two from it. Thought we would have a fight to night, the troops here have been fighting some.

2nd -- Bivouacked for last night beside our guns. Fell in for Inspection on this morning supporting the Batteries. Picket skirmishing this A.M., some artillery.

July 3rd, 1863 -- Entered in a different handwriting --
Early in the morning, about 4 o'clock, the Batteries commensed firing & CLARK WAS KILLED at nearly the first fire by a solid 12 lb. shot taking off all the back part of his head, killing him instantly. He was a good boy and soldier. The whole Co. mourn his loss & Especially his Capt. Such are the fortunes of War and they are deplorable.
