Premonition: logo 1990

From 1989 to 1992 I, Rowland, was the lead singer and lyricist for a progressive metal band called Premonition, who's total existence was from 1988 to 1994. In that time, they composed or partly composed a total of 21 songs, 10 of the 14 completed ones existing in forms on demos, four unfinished (engineered by me for school) and one official release after I had left. Though holding a decent-sized fan base of extended friends and friends of friends, who heard us at many practice sessions (large amounts of which exist on poorly recorded tapes), the band only officially performed live at one high-school function, three club shows (one of which exists on video), and four house parties. Here is a semi-detailed history of the band.

Here are the lyrics from most of the songs. I was working on getting up Real Audio files, but I doubt I'll ever bother.

Although not exactly accurate, here is a list of Premonition members during various forms of the band to give you an idea of how things changed in just a few years. To give an idea how the music developed, this is a list of songs we'd written, with approximate dates and places of origin. Elsewhere on this site is a somewhat complete discography of the various demos we've done. And I've put together a small photo album resulting from the Chexx's show.

[NEW] The band eventually morphed into a new one, so go check out StoneBlue. [NEW]

Most of the various ex-members, and a few other guests, all got together for the first time in years on May 9th, 1997 for an all-day jam session in my garage. This was brought about by the fact that, thanks to e-mail, six of the dozen former members have once again been in contact with each other. The decision to get back together was initially mentioned during a lengthy e-mail conversation between Adam and I about recently listening to old tapes of the band. I preserved a few excerpts here:

  • Excerpt One [Comments on the differences of two demos.]
  • Excerpt Two [The defense for Sweaty Worm's complexity.]
  • Excerpt Three [The non-defense for What's Wrong With Women's lyrics.]
  • Excerpt Four [From much later, with some informative background details.]

This is the only surviving .wav file, but it's worth the download time: Sam's solo from I Know, arguably one of the best things I've ever recorded. [1447 Kb]
