Bulletin Board 5
(the sequel !!!)
This is the continuation of Bulletin Board
4. In
order to reduce your page-loading time, I decided to break up this Bulletin Board into
multiple sections. Most people that I have spoken with preferred that I leave all
the previous entries in place, regardless of the dates of origin. This is because as
our class (and others) become more "online-oriented", I expect to have many
first time visitors who would probably enjoy reading these entries.

I, my wife of some 19 years, Betsy, and my supposed progeny, two boys, 10 and 11, live in the mountains of southwest Virginia near Virginia Tech. We moved here from College Station, Texas after spending many years at Texas A&M. I manage a small environmental engineering firm and do IT work on my own. Betsy teaches kindergarten. I play and coach soccer, attempt to create "sweat equity" in our house, garden, hike, and generally enjoy the outdoors here. Both my boys play soccer, play in the woods, and continually mess up my workshop and hide my tools from me.
I saw Brian Edward's post looking for Blaine Williams. I too would like to see how Blaine is doing. I was able to contact Brian Edwards, Gwen Keller, and Steve Cauffman based on their posts to the Klein '78 board. I'd love to hear from anyone that remembers me...jog my memory, I've forgotten so much.

The KHS '78 Reunion Band had
their first rehearsal on December 28th. I was able to take a few photos
while visiting Houston for the holidays which you can see on the
Current Photos
pages. See Gallery 6 or Gallery 6A.
Brent Barker is in the lineup as well, but was unable to attend this
rehearsal.
I do not have any details as of yet on the 25 Year Reunion. All I
presently know is that it is being worked. I will post the details as I
receive them.

As noted on the main home page,
the KHS Class of '78 Twenty Five Year Reunion is on. KHS Class of
'77 is joining us. For reunion details, click
here.
Speaking of KHS '77, if anyone from that class happens across this message,
you may want to consider putting together a website for your class or asking
someone from your class to take it on. When I first set out to do the
website for our class, I had never done anything like that and had absolutely
no idea of what was involved in making a website. As a matter of fact,
my initial intentions were simply to post the 20 year reunion info (time,
date, pricing, etc.) and nothing more. The website has grown over time
as you can see. I am still very much just a simple novice at it, but it
serves the purpose nonetheless. I was never too much into fancy graphics
that choke internet speeds, so I adhere to the 'keep it simple' philosophy.
Anyway, I am very much a nostalgic person and get personal enjoyment out of
having a small hand in keeping people in contact with each other. So if
there is a KHS '77er out there that would like to see a website for your
class, just adopt the Nike philosophy and just Do It! You won't regret
it!

Hello Fellow
Classmates,
What an awesome website! I have enjoyed going back and reminiscing to some of
the greatest memories. Thanks Stan for all your hard work and dedication.
This is Michelle (Mogensen) Moorman. I'm still M&M! Does anybody remember
this short, blonde, Bearkadette? I am living in The Woodlands, not far from
Klein at all. I have not been able to make the past reunions, but hoping to
make the 25th in August. It will be great to see everyone. I would love to
chat with anyone that remembers me, so I will include my e-mail address.
Please drop a line.

Maybe our Friday Night event could be at the GF club as a Swim Party and with a Poolside Rock and Roll Reunion Band?
I'm sure we can charge $10 a head to pay for beer and some food.
And if it rains, we can stay inside and set up the band there (is there room).
That would bring back some 30 year old memories.
I know there are SEVERAL alum living in Greenwood now. Can we find them? Are they GF Club members?
Please email Rick at rperkins@austin.rr.com

I've recently been typing into the computer the journal I kept every day in high school, and it's been a HOOT to remember all the crazy stuff. Remember field days? Western days? Dances at St. Edward's? The pipe bomb that went off by the auditorium? The bus caravans to football games were great.
Remember wading through a foot of water between classes? Peeling out in the parking lot? "Hey Look Me Over"?

Thank you for the response. This makes me feel so connected to Curtis and continuing his memory. What a neat feeling. Curtis & I were quite close. We lost our dad in 1972 and I believe he felt he had a lot of responsibility being the oldest in the family of 3 children. I was the only girl, so he was a little protective. He was always telling me not to be like him and it was "too late" for him to change. You know - I was trying to be the rebellious teenager (it was a lousy act, I imagine to get his attention). As soon as I got home from work yesterday I called my mother and stepfather to tell them about the website. My mom wasn't home but I told my step dad. They have lived in Iowa for approximately 6 years. He said in about 1998 (maybe the 20 year reunion), someone called from Klein High School inquiring about Curtis. He told them he was killed shortly after graduation; November 17, 1978. Stan, you are welcome to put these messages on the bulletin boards. I would love to share memories of Curtis and especially hear from others. I hope you are having a joyous & safe holiday season.

I found the website and enjoyed looking back at the great times at Klein. Thank you for managing this site. Great fun seeing all the faces. I’ll forward some photos. My email is communications@aoma.edu and stubug@austin.rr.com. I am sitting at the front desk, waiting for my wife. I was surfing the net and found this site.
Here is what I am up to . . . after Klein, I graduated from UT, lived in Colorado for a few years, but moved back to Texas and settled in Austin. Married in ’84, my wife and I live in South Austin with our 5 dogs, 2 cats, and 3 chickens. We have no kiddos, and working hard not to be the couple who treats their pets as children. We own and manage an acupuncture school www.aoma.edu. Very long story how that came to be.
I skipped the 25 year reunion, but plan to make the 30th. Give me a call. The times running around with y’all were some of the best of my life.
Until then,

I don’t know if I qualify for the bulletin board, but I was a member of the class during the junior high years (5th – 8th grade). I lived in Enchanted Oaks, played drums in the band, played on the football team and played baseball at Spring-Klein during the summer. I found the website by accident and I have really enjoyed seeing the pictures, old and new. The class changed a lot in the 4 years after I left, but there are still a lot of familiar faces.
It has been neat to see where people’s lives have taken them and hard to look at the ‘In Memoriam’ page. Y’all have done a great job of staying in touch with each other and keeping the memories alive.
Thanks,

Hey All,
Greetings from unusually dry and sunny Sofia, Bulgaria. This year record rainfall has generated mass flooding which in turn has resulted in millions upon millions in material loss and, even worse, loss of life.
So what are you doing in Bulgaria, Brian? September 2002 we moved here to join the United Theological Faculty of the Bulgarian Evangelical Theological Institute. (Here in Europe they call colleges “faculties.”) A bit of background: At the invitation of the Bulgarian government we are here long-term to help train the nation’s emerging pastors, having served as a pastor myself in the States since ’87. Communism has left a long shadow in this former Soviet republic, but the government was desperate to jump start it’s populace after the changes came in ’91. Decades of “There is no God” sucked the soul out the nation, and it’s not hard to observe the effects of that travesty every day. You see, while the powers-that-be may not agree with the philosophical and theological conclusions, they are pragmatic enough to recognize that, down through the centuries, wherever historical, biblical Christianity has spread, quality of life has risen. Naturally they desire the same results for their own people, willing to tolerate the means in order to achieve the ends. The same thing has been going on in many other former Soviet countries, including mother Russia, herself.
Kathy and I are grateful to be serving the Lord here, and our kids have adapted well. This is not to say that it is easy, because it’s not. But knowing you’re where you’re supposed to be and doing what you love and have been trained to do is like, well…there ain’t nothin’ like it.
One of the benies of living abroad is the nearness of adventure. Several pix give a glimpse: Kathy and I are relaxing over capuccio in one of our favorite spots, the Glockenspiel Café at Mozart Plaza in Salzburg, Austria (the kids are ice skating in the rink just outside the window). Then there’s our 15 year-old, Karis, perched above the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. Andrew, 13, seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time at Boy Scout Archery Camp. Then our youngest and bubbliest, Hope, is glowing in front of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
It’s great to scan through some of the messages and pix on the bulletin board, and Stan, thanx for all you’ve done, now over the years. I do wish I could get down to the Houston area sometime, but Dallas is about as far south as I ever go. Oh well, perhaps one day.
God bless you all.

Hello Everyone:
I just got through looking at some of the posted pictures from Class Reunions and noticed some old and dear friends, Lisa Baehr, Cathy Bynum, Susan Brown, Robert Calva, Susan Frisbee, and many more. So good to see all of you after all these years.
My home has been Denver, Colorado, since graduation. I have a 28 year old daughter, Melissa, who recently married Dr. Scott McClellan in August of 2006. They live in Savannah, GA. Melissa is a forensic pathologist and graduated from Baylor University in 2002. My second oldest is Timothy who is now 20 and is a junior studying Physical Therapy, and my youngest is Derek, now 17 and a junior in High School.
I have recently retired from Nursing; I practiced as a RN for the past 25 years. My beautiful wife Debra, who has shared the last 28 yrs with me, continues to work at the Gate Rubber Company where she has been employed for the past 32 years.
IF you would like to correspond please email me at: michaelvgrigsby@comcast.net. Be safe and God Bless

Dear Bearkats of ’78,
Thought I’d check in, this time from Oxford, UK. I’ve begun a PhD not only because our college’s accreditation requires it, but also because I’ve aimed to do so for many years. I'm still teaching in Sofia, Bulgaria at the Bulgarian Evangelical Theological Institute, but also here in Ox-town to get my doctoral studies under way.
As you might imagine, the level of scholarship here is very intense. I wouldn’t say that the load is too heavy yet, but that will no doubt be changing soon. PhD research must expand the general body of knowledge so called, and thus be original. Given this, I'm wondering if I’ve ever had an original thought in my entire life. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea. Done properly, research generates expertise in a particular area of exploration. One of the examiners’ criteria will be, “Does this guy have what it takes to lead the academy, to join the ranks of intellectual leadership, to expand the corpus of knowledge in general?” Sounds a bit daunting to me. Oh, well. Onward and upward.
I
meet with a professor in precisely two hours (according to Tom
Tower’s bell clanging away at this moment over at Christ’s Church
College across the street) to discuss my research concept, and it’s
entirely possible that he may wind up becoming my supervisor. After
that hurdle, things will pick up both in difficulty and speed.
Kathy and 2/3 of our kids are doing well. Our oldest, Karis, came down with Mono while hiking in the French Alps back in August of 05. Unfortunately, she falls into that small statistical minority which experiences prolonged effects. She used to run 5-7K every day, now she can barely ascend a flight of stairs. We would appreciate your prayer for her.
We will be back in Lincoln, NE on furlough for the next year, so feel free to get in touch if you’d like @ 402-261-4990.
Hope you are doing well, and let’s see some more postings (with pix).

P.S. Famous story: when King Charles I was holed up in Oxford during the time of the Civil War (mid-1600s; Ollie Cromwell was his opposition), he thought he’d do a little reading. By this time already, the Oxford Library (i.e. officially called Bodley's Library) was famous, being en toto more than 100 yrs old. And Thomas Bodley had set up his library to be a lending library only, not wanting all of his hard work to vanish volume by volume. His vision had been to establish a library which would last, not for a few years, nor for 100, or even longer, but to establish a library that would endure. Period! So he laid down the law from the beginning (not the very beginning, but beginning his involvement, which was when the library became a serious, enduring enterprise). Being a military man (and very high ranking at that), he declared that no books shall ever leave the library. It shall not be a lending, but a reading library.
Anyway, King Chuck sent some page to the library to fetch such and such a book. Rather courageously, however, the librarian sent word back via the page that no books could be released from the library. History reveals that the librarian in question (forget his name) did not lose his head. The king, however, did go on to lose his (in 1649).

BTW, in 1602, when Bodley got involved, the library was, you could say, remodeled. So that’s when its continuous use began, and the date that is celebrated today as the starting point of the library of longest continuous use in the western world.
In my opinion the coolest part is the sort-of central reading room, the Radcliffe Camera (camera being Latin for rotunda). It’s merely a reading room, but it’s beautiful. I spend most of my time in here. (Pictured to the left. The spire is of St. Mary the Virgin University Church.)
Another BTW (then I’ve got to get back to work). The Bodleian is a national repository library. This means that, by law, it must receive a copy of every single book published in the UK every year. Translation: every year they build 5K of new shelving space for new books. And the rate of publishing/acquisition is going up, so you can imagine the board meetings that folks are having to try to figure out this conundrum. (And I can still remember try to avoid books back at KHS!)
