NEWS FLASH (sort of)
it's 15 december 2005, the boys are sleeping and my wife is out at a
company Christmas dinner. hence, i've finally found some time to work on
my website, and i am anticipating a move over to kimnach.org someday
(soon?). in the mean time, i have added a rough write-up of my pole
building which began construction in december 2004. i have also added a
few pictures of the boys to my family web site, which is password
protected and accesible by family members and friends only.
what you will and will not
find here
no resume. no biography. no pictures of me, my family, my pets, my
house, or any of my stuff--except where necessary and expressly selected
by you. nor will you see a hit counter. it takes a certain arrogance to
think others want or need to see all that, or for me to be so curious as
to see how many have come here. what i hope you do find is some objective
(sometimes subjective, i'll admit) information to help you. nothing to
stroke my ego. and hopefully, nothing to insult you. perhaps something to
initiate discussion or thought.
pictures of pertinent information can be downloaded separately, if
they're too large; otherwise, graphics are kept to a minimum and used only
when necessary. and you won't find the omnipresent and ill-begotten
javascript applets, nor "cookies", nor business advertisements
tying up your time or resources (well, advertisements are beyond my
control since that's the isp's perogative), nor frames to lock you into a
less than pleasing display. all these have their place: few and far in
between. definitely not here!
links which are not yet completed are indicated with
red text (as indicators for me also).
don't bother clicking on them.
o.k, i feel like i'm diverging from my attempt to create a "smaller,
leaner, faster" web site.....but i must answer two questions that
you're probably asking yourself by now:
hey, why the poor typing and
the plain site?
no capital letters! "broken keyboard? those amigas!" you think
to yourself. no, it's a trade-mark of sorts. o.k., so
e.e. cummings
did it long before me. but i'm lazy:-) actually, i've discovered over the
years that, while attempting to hit the shift key, i miss more often than
not. why fight a freudian suggestion?
now, the easy and straightforward one: why is my home page so bland?
aren't web sites supposed to be pretty and overwhelming? well, have you
ever gone to one of those "pretty" sites? you know, the
cacophony of flames, spinning logos, javascripts, additional browser
windows with ads to all sorts of undesired sites, bright red text on a sea
of primary blue, unrequested audio/video files, etc.? by the time your
connection (cable, phone, or dsl) downloads all that garbage, not only
does it not add anything to your enjoyment of or knowledge gained from the
web site, you get a headache, eye strain, frayed nerves, and an attitude
about the uselessness of web sites. so, i've decided to make this site as
simple and as graphically non-intense as possible. that is, make it a
painless site to load (and exit?). to make it useful, i hope, for both you
and me.
here are some reasons that i think you may find my
site of some minuscule use:
- woodworking
page: this is a tough one. it's among my favorite hobbies and
pastimes. but what to put here that hasn't been done thousands of times?
well, a faux pas soon after my wife & i moved into
our home in hinckley, ohio led
me to the idea of an on-line compound miter calculator and animation.
right now it's only a tutorial on basic geometry and how mathematics is,
in fact, useful in real life! interested? then click
here. also, i put together
a quick page summarizing the
construction of my pole building and the assembley of my clearvue cyclone.
- my amiga home page. within
these pages you'll find:
- amiga hardware and software reviews and tutorials. especially
those pertaining to the toaster/flyer. dvd recently has caught the
respect of my eyes and much, if not all, of my analog gear will go.
however, i will continue to use my amiga toaster/flyer to edit
videos. and i will use a intel box to create dvds with graphical
menus (my dmr-e20 is capable of plain text only). in
these pages i shall write about my
experience with the marriage of these two video compression systems
(the flyer's VTASC and dvd's mpeg2), will have tutorials or reviews
of software packages for both platforms, or whatever comes to mind
and whatever i have time to do.
- amiga
tower hacks. i've definately seen better towers than
what i've done, but many have complimented me on this information so
i am including much of the info from my old exchangenet site. a
companion metal-working tips
section is included also.
-
computers in the classroom. while
i think that computers--and especially those linked to the internet--and
calculators have little place in the elementary classroom,
computers and the "web" can be a useful tools. a starting
point for research and a means to solve complex problems; but not an
end-all solution. you'll find my thoughts on the "dangers" of
the web and "high tech" classrooms
here. i admit that i'm not an
expert, i'm just someone who was in elementary school when the "bomar
brain" was synonymous with "calculator" and got my b.e.e.
and m.s.e.e. without thinking that computers were "the thing to
learn." and this leads to:
- electrical
engineering. well, being an electrical engineer i have
decided that i may well attempt to put some basic tutorials on my
web-site. this is my attempt to inspire kids to realize that there is
more to school & life than sports, video games, and "surfing
the web." furthermore, i'll use this page as a source of more
detailed links to my employer's site and some of it's projects. with all
this i hope to educate kids (and adults). lofty goals, indeed!
- multiculturalism.
while on the surface it's one of the nicest "feel good"
movements, i truly believe that this will cause more divisiveness and an
inability to truly fulfill our u.s. constitution's assertion that "all
men are created equal." we all should be proud of our heritage, but
at what cost? what would happen in a culture which is publically
multicultural and multilingual? what ever happened to being an american?
that is, a non-hyphenated american.
- the y2k phenomenon: my views on the
over-reaction to this overblown, money-making scare. (oh, this reminds
me of one of my pet peeves: 2000 is NOT the first year of the new
millennium, it's the last of this millennium! no matter how much the
news media, concert promoters, party centers, etc. would like you to
believe that it is--it's NOT!!! but i digress.) talk about
misunderstanding statistics, massaging numbers to mean what you want, or
just plain greediness on the part of so many. you'll find my diatribe on
this page. oh, and you'll find a light-hearted recounting of the last
millennium scare.
- betamax
information. in all of its sub-formats it's always been the best,
and still is the best analog consumer format--in my opinion.... maybe
here i'll fall victim to the mibabty syndrome:-)
- tbd, to be determined. as i have either the time, the
inclination, or additional web-space on my isp's server, i'll add other
stuff to this, my little corner of the virtual universe.
