Members of The American Minature Schnauzer Club

As a member club of the American Miniature Schnauzer Club we have adopted the Code of Ethics of the American Miniature Schnauzer Club.  They are as follows:

    Code of Ethics

    General:

I will maintain high standards of health and care for my dogs.

I will comply with AKC rules and regulations.

I will make every effort to learn about the structure, anatomy, action, inherited traits and behavior of the dog; especially where such learning applies to terrier breeds and specifically to the Miniature Schnauzer.

I will sign and abide by the American Miniature Schnauzer Club Eye Pledge.

    Breeding:

    A. I will at all times breed for the improvement of the breed as exemplified by the AKC Standard.

    B. I will direct my efforts toward producing Miniature Schnauzers of such quality that they will serve to improve and compliment the breed and avoid breeding individual Miniature Schnauzers with faults which could pass down through future generations to the detriment of the breed as defined by the Standard.

Registration and Sales/or Transfer of Ownership:

    A. Puppies and adults will be sold with a written health guarantee, three generation pedigree, record of shots, care and feeding instructions, and registration papers where applicable.

    B. The seller shall inform the buyer of the characteristics of Miniature Schnauzers, and make available to the novice the benefit of his advice and experience.

    C. All puppies having a disqualifying fault, known hereditary defect, or of unsound temperament will be sold with a Limited Registration or Spay/Neuter Contract.

    D. The breeder shall remain responsible for the welfare of every dog he breeds, sells or places. This means making himself available to aid the new owner if and when the need presents itself. If in the future the owner is not able to keep the dog, the owner should be instructed to contact the seller and the seller will have the responsibility to either take the dog back or find it a new home.

    E. The breeder will not sell or dispose of any dog through pet shops, wholesalers, commercial dealers or paid agents.

    Sportsmanship

I will conduct myself in a manner that is in the best interest of the breed and the AMSC.

Finally, I will use the official standard of the breed when evaluating and breeding my own stock, and encourage its application in judging.

    Eye Pledge
    I promise:

    1. To make a determined effort to have slit lamp examinations of all puppies to determine the existence of congenital (juvenile) cataracts.

    2. To retire from breeding any dam or sire that has produced a puppy with congenital cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy.

    3. To send a report of the eye examination and pedigree of every affected Miniature Schnauzer with eye problems (and all affected litter mates as well as the total number in the litter) to whomever the AMSC Board designates to collect this information and to assist concerned breeders.

    4. To make an effort to examine yearly all show and breed stock by a qualified ACVO.

    5. To make a determined effort to have all breeding animals tested for the presence of the progressive retinal atrophy gene by means of a DNA test once such a test is developed and is available.
