Unfortunately, several hundred prom kids thought so too and came to Duke for pictures!! What chaos... despite the parking and we had a simply wonderful day. We had the best help and the best company to make our day - - well - - the best!!! |

Utah? What's in Utah?
We had a wonderful 12 days through southern Utah. We mountain biked in Moab on the Porcupine Rim, visited and hiked several national parks Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Bryce and Zion, and explored all sorts of neat out of the way places. Sunset at delicate arch and walking the rock fins with steep drop offs was incredible. The mule ride through Bryce was a hoot - good old Roundy and Blueberry liked to walk right on the edge of the canyon rim. The bike ride thousands of feet about the Colorado river and was exhilarating. The 2500 foot climb to the top of Zion 's lookout point was simply breath taking. My favorite had to be the slot canyons. A 27 mile drive down a washboard aptly named Hole-in-the-rock road - left on dry fork (another washed out dirt road) - a hike through the desert and checkerboard mesa - and there you are - slip between the water carved walls of three of the neatest slot canyons you'll ever see! Mitch and I got engaged!
March 7th, Mitch and I were just home from work. We were about to get ready for his company dinner, to celebrate their round of funding, when Mitch called to me from the spare bedroom that we use as an exercise room... "Katie, can you come take a look at your bike"
You see, I own a rather old, or let's say vintage, Eddy Merckx road bike - awesome bike - down tube shifters and classic Campy parts - but I have struggle with the fit - and have had more than my fair share of shifting problems. Mitch had been on me to think about a new bike - he even had suckered me into trying a really nice Specialized Ruby when we were at the bike store to get a pair of shoes for him. Never ride a nice bike when you don't want to shell out the money and have to go back to your old one ... because after a day or two I just had to call the store to talk price, but they had already sold it!
So, at this point I was pretty sure Mitch was going to point out another thing that was going to need maintenance on my bike. I came to the doorway and glanced at the Merckx. Mitch said, "No, not that bike, your new bike." and motioned to the bike rack on the wall. Hanging on rack was the Ruby! My jaw hit the floor. I stared at him, then the bike, then him. I stuttered to put it together, "That's not my bike. That's my bike? You! You bought it! You! YOU CAN"T PAY FOR THIS!" and just as I peak with excitement Mitch said, "So, the question I had was - Your new bike came with an extra reflector and I was wonder where you'd like me to put it?" and out came a tiny green box. He opened the box in mid sentence and a beautiful sparkle shone across the room. By this point I was having a mild heart attack and had backed most the way out of the room in disbelief. Mitch got down on one knee and proposed - and without hesitation, he received a tearful "yes" (and for those of you that know me well - I am telling the truth - I really did make a decision that quick - the first time I didn't agonize or have to sleep on a decision in a long time!)
I also found out Mitch had asked my dad's permission and dad hadn't let the secret slip at all while I was around!! We did still have dinner that night - and the whole company knew Mitch was planning to purpose - so our entry was met with a couple thumbs up thumbs down questioning looks for him - just to make sure things had gone well =) I was pretty much in a daze for the next couple days =)
As for the questions - No dates are set, no plans made, and to the question, "was I more excited about the ring or the bike? We may never know =)
Jackson Hole! snow snow snow! 1/28/06
It just never stopped snowing in Jackson Hole! What a fantastic trip. We had almost a foot of new snow EVERY DAY. The crew was Mitch - Me - Brian - Michele - Shag - and Brian H. The Best Western Lodge was a great deal with free breakfast - bus - and the oh-so-curcial hottub. We cut fresh tracks from TenSleep to Cheyenne Gully (aka Death Valley =) and the boys tore up Tower Three and Alta Chutes too. We had a wonderful day at Targee - we missed Shag and Michele who took off early, but, oh- THE POWDER AREA helped us cope!
Jackson was perfect snow with just the right amount of, "What have I done?" adrenaline (when you pop through the trees and find yourself surrounded with the "Cliff" signs) The only downer was when the mountain took Brian's helmet cam tape and so thoughtfully replaced it with a snowball. Faulty pack zippers or the mountain telling us to come back another year and try again? At least we saw some of the great footage at lunch...
Mitch carried the Nikon one day - check out the pics

Can you say, "Ouch?" ...... I can. 12/29/06
Well, I made it to 30 before I actually broke a part of me completely off. An unfortunate accident at Wintergreen 12/29 brought me a bit too close to the handle of my ski pole during an otherwise boring fall. I caught a ski tip in a little fluff and went down in what was a pretty easy fall - almost silly. No blood, no bruises, no tears - and then I notice - no tooth!... the only thing I could think was, "THAT knock out my tooth!? THAT? I've hit my teeth harder on a coffee cup." I was just figuring out which one it was when Mitch came down. I think he was ready for blood to start gushing. We didn't have much luck finding any pieces in the snow - so I had to leave it for the snow groomers =( Mitch was great - I wasn't sure what to do - but I knew that he would know - cause he went through this with the same tooth in a baseball accident...
After I found out there was nothing we could do and I would have to see my dentist the next week, I half way wanted to keep skiing. But another unfortunate event with ski patrol left a 10 inch gouge on the base of my ski - that pretty much sealed the deal on that day. OH yes - and the breathing - cold air and broken tooth do not mix... makes a brain freeze seem like child's play. Wayland, Malissa and Mitch were so nice - we cut the ski day a bit short and headed out. They hooked my up with wine and a straw to help numb the pain =)
I was sporting the boxer look for 3 days, but have a temporary fix in place now. The next few months to a year should show if the tooth will die or just wear on like the rest of me!
The pain on the broken end was considerable and the jokes were never-ending =) I have to admit, it does look like I could strip the insulation of a wire with no hands =) The worst was when I freaked out a little kid in a store.
I guess I am going to have to quit smiling so much when I ski... but that's going to be hard - have you seen the forecast for JACKSON !
