Introduction

This document is based on the research of one Dietrich Koeppel, Mahrburg/Lahn, conducted to establish whether his and our families are related. The result was that they are not related. This research was conducted in the 1960s. Dietrich traced our family to the oldest known ancestor, Barthelmes Köppel who lived around 1660 in Küstrin in the Neumark, today Kostrzyn in Poland, just East of the Polish/German border. Much of the early family history takes place in an area of Europe then part of Germany, since Worldwar II part of Poland. Place names are given in the German that would have been used in the records.

Several small corrections have been made to Dietrich's original research, based on available records.

Most of Dietrich's research goes up to 1965. It has been extended to be current for my own immediate family, not any others.

We know of two branches of our family, members of which have taken up residence in the USA:

1) a child or children of one Otto Koeppel (17 May 1835 in Pappelhorst - 27 May 1913 in Berlin), which would have taken place sometime in the 19th century. Correspondance between members of this branch in Germany and the USA appears to have lasted into the early 20th century. No further details are available.

2) myself in 1973.
