Notes for MOSES ELLSWORTH:
The Ellsworth family appears as early as 1760 in the upper valley of the South Branch of the Potomac, at that time a part of Augusta Co, later Rockingham and now Pendleton Co. The Augusta records show that at least three families of the name were early settlers in that section. In 1765, Moses Ellsworth acquired 60 acres on the North Fork of the South Branch, and in 1771 acquired 357 acres adjoining. Jacob Ellsworth purchased 215 acres in 1771 in the same region. In 1785 Moses Sr., Moses Jr., and Jacob are all listed as heads of families in that section, but the name does not appear on the tithable lists for 1790, indicating that they had moved away.

Moses Ellsworth was spoken of in the life of Jos Quinn and called the "pious patriarch" of an extensive, pious ,and amiable family." The proof that Moses was a Rev War Patriot was furnished to M Doughman, by Edith H Whitaker, of London, 0. The descendants of William Jackson and Hannah Bennett are eligible to D.A.R. membership through him.
It is stated that Mary Hinkle, wife of Moses, has Rev War ancestor, in her father.

Notes for JOSEPH BENNETT:
The origin of the Bennett family on the upper waters of the South Branch of the Potomac is somewhat obscure. One family tradition recites that the family is of Scotch origin, migrated to NJ, and thence to MD. In Maryland, one William Bennett married Hannah Lee, member of a family located in old Montgomery Co. This Bennett is said to have been a relative of Richard Bennett, colonial Govenor of Virginia. In some way a contact was made with the Green family land syndicate, which had contacts with Culpepper Co., Va. and York Co., Pa. Another tradition recites that the founder came to America with Braddock in 1755; landed at Alexandria; took part in the campaign in western Pa and remained along the Potomac. Definite records trace the family in Pendleton Co regions, back to 1767, when surveys were made of lands along the North Fork of the South Branch River. The territory at this time was a part of Rockingham Co., Va.
The first whom we have any information, in this direct line was a Joseph Bennett, who served as a member of Harrison’s Militia Co. in 1788.

Notes for EDWARD JACKSON: Edward Jackson, was born in New Jersey, and emigrated with his family to Harrison Co, Va. now W Va. In 1793.
During the revolution the Second Virginia Regiment was ordered from Va. to join the forces under Washington in operations around NY. In doing this, the regiment was stationed near the home of the said Jackson, and in all probability, (Edward) enlisted Aug. 13, 1776, and his son Stephen joined a company under James Willis at that time. It seems they served until the close of the war, and both were wounded at Yorktown.
In 1793, the said Edward Jackson and his family removed to Harrison County in Western Virginia, where they located on Brown’s Creek. His will, dated May 7, 1807, is on record at Clarksburg, W Va., in will bk 1, p 332. The children are named as legatees. The inventory of his estate was filed and recorded June 29, 1807 (Will bk 1, p413).
Further investigation discloses- In the 20th Report of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, from Oct 11, 1916 to Oct 11, 1917(Senate Document No 241,66th Congress, 2nd session, Washington) under the caption ‘Graves of Revolutionary soldiers’ on p 70 appears---
"Jackson, Edward, born 1730, died 1807"
Served in Capt. James Willis’ co, 2nd Va. Regiment, wounded at battle of Yorktown, buried the home farm.

"My grandfather, Jacob M Jackson, must have married in W Va., for my father told me many times, that when coming to Ohio and attempting to ford the Scioto at Chillicothe the water was so deep, due to heavy rain, that the wagon was almost swamped when the horses were empelled to swim and floated way down the river, finally reached the other side and landed safely. Granville, my fathers oldest brother was a child in arms and my grandfather had to hold him up above the water. My great grandfather, Wm Jackson was riding the wheel horse and driving the load horse."

A Hollis "Hod" Long Memoir;
The last several years hod was a sick man and nearly blind and his way of living was not the best, but he didn’t try to hide it as so many do and he never hurt or abused anyone but himself. Hod, I and twenty other Van Buren County men rode the bus to Ft. Des Moines to enter the Army on May 20th, 1942. Hod and I were both sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. along with most of the others. I went into the 25th division and was sent to North Africa. Hod never had a furlough home and in a short time was sent to the South Pacific with the 43rd Division, where he took part in the first bloody invasions of the Jap held islands, where the Americans were always out numbered.
He came home in Sept. 1945, took off his uniform and said nothing about his service. I doubt many knew of the medals he won. These were not theatre of Operations Medal, but on his chest the Purple Heart, Battle Ribbons, and 4 Battle Stars.
I, for one, have always thought that a man should be not judged by a few years of his life, but his total life, and I think Hod’s can compare favorably with anyone in service and dedication to his country. The best that can be said of anyone was told to me by Maurice Miller of Birmingham, who went into the army with Hod, in the South Pacific, and into battle with him, "He was a damn good soldier". --Fred Elerick Van Buren Co., Ia

A Hollis "Hod" Long Memoir
The last several years Hod was a sick man and nearly blind and his way of living was not the best, but he didn’t try to hide it as so many do and he never hurt or abused anyone but himself. Hod, I and twenty other Van Buren County men rode the bus to Ft. Des Moines to enter the Army on May 20th, 1942. Hod and I were both sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. along with most of the others. I went into the 25th division and was sent to North Africa. Hod never had a furlough home and in a short time was sent to the South Pacific with the 43rd Division, where he took part in the first bloody invasions of the Jap held islands, where the Americans were always out numbered.
He came home in Sept. 1945, took off his uniform and said nothing about his service. I doubt many knew of the medals he won. These were not theatre of Operations Medal, but on his chest the Purple Heart, Battle Ribbons, and 4 Battle Stars.
I, for one, have always thought that a man should be not judged by a few years of his life, but his total life, and I think Hod’s can compare favorably with anyone in service and dedication to his country. The best that can be said of anyone was told to me by Maurice Miller of Birmingham, who went into the army with Hod, in the South Pacific, and into battle with him, "He was a damn good soldier". --Fred Elerick Van Buren Co., Ia

Don and Janet Long live West of Pittsburg on J40. They have a beautiful home, with a welcoming atmosphere, located near where Don’s father and grandfather lived.
Don’s grandfather, Otto Jackson Long, acquired the acreage many years ago. Don is retired from the Armed Services of the Navy. He spent many years at sea, including Hawaii. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a plumber and then Maintenance Manager at Van Buren Schools, until retiring in August of 1997. He remembers attending school himself at Pittsburg. In his spare time, he enjoys collecting antique oak furniture for repairs and resale. Janet is an avid collector of Kewpie dolls, and enjoys tole painting.
