I wanted
to recommend this FREE program that allows you to preview your email before you
download it. You can also delete it, put the sender on a blacklist, or
bounce it. Bouncing the email returns it to the sender making that your email
address look invalid. Most will automatically remove you from their list.
This is MUCH better than trying to request being removed. When you request
to be removed, most of these unwanted emails will actually add you to a
validated email list and resell it to others.

SpyBot-S&D [1158k] Windows (All) FREE
http://www.safer-networking.org/
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105384
SpyBot-S&D is an adware and spyware detection and removal tool. This includes removal of certain advertising components that may gather statistics as well as detection of various keylogging and other spy utilities. In addition, it also securely removes PC and Internet usage tracks, including browser history, temporary pages, cookies (with the option to keep selected) and more. The program offers an attractive Microsoft Outlook-style interface that is easy to use and multi-lingual. SpyBot-S&D allows you to exclude selected cookies, programs, or extensions from being reported, allowing you to prevent false positive messages for items that you don't want to be alerted to every time. It can even scan your download directory for files that have been downloaded, but not yet installed, allowing you to detect unwanted programs before you even install them. SpyBot produces a detailed and easy-to- understand report before it deletes any files, and allows you to deselect any item that you do not want to be processed. In addition, a recovery feature allows you to restore your settings if needed. SpyBot-S&D is a very nice tool that exceeds the capabilities of the popular Ad-aware application.
Mike over at SpywareInfo.com suggested I give SpyBot S&D a shot on a system that was having some repeated issues with automatic dialer bots. AdAware flagged a few things that appeared to be on the right track, but the nasty behavior persisted. SpyBot S&D works a bit differently, but has the same basic goal as AdAware, but it found several things that AdAware did not. While I won't say that AdAware is to be ditched in favor of SpyBot S&D, I will be using them side-by-side from now on.
As long as I'm talking about Mike and spyware in general, do stop by his growing site and see what he's working on. He hangs out with us in the chatroom daily, and is an excellent source of wisdom when it comes to the spyware subject. He's even got a great start on a weekly newsletter to keep you informed of the latest dirt he's managed to sniff out.

Resources & Information For Developing Your
Web Site
|
|
Browsers
|
|
Browsers allow you to view web sites on your computer and depending upon the
type and version, can incorporate plugins to view pictures, sounds and
animation files. It is important that you test your finished web site for browser compatibility. Too often a new designer finds their site looks good on their browser/monitor but does not on other computers. Here are links to the most common browsers used today. |
| Microsoft Explorer Popular browser included with Microsoft Windows products |
| Netscape Navigator Another popular browser used with AOL and many private customers. (NOT SUGGESTED!!!) |
| Opera A lesser known browser from that is known for speed and stablity. Free or paid versions are available. |

Web Site Design
|
|
|
You can design a web
site. Four different ways: 1) Use an online web site builder. This is perfect for beginners and offers a fast and easy way to build a simple web site fast but it has some limitations. 2) Use an HTML editor to build your site using the raw software code. This is for advanced users who want to have the ultimate control over their web site. It can take months to learn and is not recommended unless you have lots of time and patience. 3) WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web site design software. This software allows you to build a web site without having to learn HTML code. You create pages just like you do in common graphic design or word-processing software where you insert text, pictures and tables and the program will create all the HTML code for you. This is the way that most web site designers build their web sites 4) Hire a professional web site designer to build your site. If you don't have the time, patience, software or hardware and don't mind paying, this can be a good option. If you are a business where image is important and need your site up quickly, then this might be an option. Web site design can range from a few hundred dollars to many thousands and typical rates run $20-$45 per hour. Remember, when you hire a designer, you are paying for their thousands of hours of experience and often years of knowledge just like any other professional like a doctor or lawyer. Make sure to ask for references and negotiate rates carefully before they begin any work. You can check our forum boards under "web designers" to locate designers already familiar with Lowesthosting.com. |

Forwarding one webpage
to another via the meta refresh tag: This is how you can create a redirection page using html code to forward one web page to another. This can be useful if you want to place a hidden counter on a page and then redirect to another page, or if you phase out a page and want to redirect people to your updated page or to another website. It will work with any html page and by varying the content tag number from 0 to any other number will determine the time delay for the forward to occur. simply cut and paste this text into the header of the page you wish to redirect and make sure you change the URL to the domain you want to forward to. <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.domain_you_want_to_forward_to.com"> No right click: If you want to keep people from saving your pictures or web content, add this simple java script to the head of your webpage. Works with most browsers. |

Old Version
{Newer isn't better} Let's say you're running Winamp. Suddenly, you hear (through the online grapevine) that there's a new version available. Before you make that mad rush to download it, stop and ask yourself if there's any reason for the change. Chances are, your old version works just fine. New doesn't necessarily mean it's right for you (or your PC). This is true of any application. Here, you'll find links to some of the more popular programs available - and all of their "older" versions. If you got swept up in the NEW! craze, take a few steps back and get running smoothly again.

TightVNC W9x/2k/XP FREE
"VNC (an abbreviation for Virtual Network Computing) is a great client / server software package allowing remote network access to graphical desktops. With VNC, you may allow yourself to access your machine from everywhere provided that your machine is connected to the Internet. VNC is free (released under the GNU General Public License) and it's available on most platforms. The original VNC distribution can be obtained at the AT&T research labs site. Here you can find enhanced version of VNC, called TightVNC (grown from the VNC Tight Encoder project), which is optimized to work over slow network connections such as low-speed modem links. While original VNC may be very slow when your connection is not fast enough, with TightVNC you can work remotely almost in real time in most environments. Besides bandwidth optimizations, TightVNC also includes many other improvements, optimizations and bug fixes over VNC."

{Alternative transfer tool} Typically, your digicam will come with software that you can use to download photos, edit them, and then share them with your enemies. Well, your friends and family, anyway. If you're looking for something simpler, though, give this app a look. Select the USB source (your camera), then select the folder you want the pictures to be dropped into. After that, you can edit, crop, and resize the photo and send it off via e-mail. File formats can also be changed. And yes, if you hadn't figured it out already, all of this can be done with this one (free) program. It also assumes that your media as mounted as a removable drive.
Microsoft Windows Media Encoder v7.1 [4.4M] W9x/2k FREE
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/wm7/encoder.asp
{Make Windows Media files} I can't believe that I ever lived in the computer world without this program. You have no idea how many hours of editing and fiddling around with media files that I could have saved with Microsoft Windows Media Encoder! That's OK though... the past is behind us, and I have it now. *sigh* I know what you are thinking... what's the big deal? Well, class, we all know that almost every PC in the world runs Windows Media Player, since a large majority of the PC community runs Windows. Now, imagine if you could create high-quality Windows Media files from your own machine. (See, now the coolness of this program is starting to make sense!) With Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, you can capture live video/audio, capture from a file, or do a mixture of both. You can record your own dialogue to go with a picture or movie you created and choose the quality of the media output file. You'll have to excuse me while I take a second to freak out but I just ran across another exciting feature of this software... you can do a LIVE broadcast! Now how cool is that? If you work for a company, this is great for board meetings where participants are in different locations. If you are a home user, then imagine being able to do a live video for Grandma. The possibilities are endless. The only thing you have to do is download the program and see for yourself. [BS]

{Make transparent windows} Sorry, Windows 9x users, but this program is just for the XP and 2k folks. So, if you happen to be running of either of those operating systems and want a quick and simple way to make any one of your windows transparent, look no further than Glass2k. Right-click a window or use pre-defined keyboard shortcuts. This program will even remember previous settings and let you set one window on top at all times. "And with this latest version, you can easily make the windows taskbar transparent." Now you can be working on a document in the foreground while you watch our Webcams refresh behind it.

"Places a number of user selected files in a single self extracting / self decrypting executable file called a File Vault. A File Vault can be sent easily to anyone over the Internet and only accessed with your password. The recipient of a File Vault does not have to have any special software installed to decrypt or access a file vault. Each File Vault is totally self contained. This makes for easy attaching, receiving and general use. FILE VAULT USES THE BLOWFISH ALGORITHM. File Vault allows you to open the vault, access the files, then close the vault which performs a secure wipe of the files from the disk surface."

{Maximize empty CD space} You've paid for the entire CD-ROM disc, but how can you make sure that you're using it to its fullest capacity? Grab this bodacious burning binary! It'll analyze all the files and folders (found in a specific folder) and group them so that you're using every last chunk of space on that piece of media. Larger files have priority over smaller ones (which can be saved for the subsequent burn). Oh yes, you can span your archiving over several discs. I haven't been this excited about burning things sense those days on the sidewalk with the ants and my magnifying glass. Or was it boy scout camp with that can of propellant?
I very highly recommend anyone interested in networking cozy up with Network Monitor or other network analysis tool. Here's a Network Analysis 101 self-paced course (in zipped .MPG format) to get you started, and a there's my favorite book on the subject, Network Analysis and Troubleshooting by my good friend J. Scott Haugdahl.
There's no wrong way to do something right. Kevin Schumacher proves it with another way to get around those "no right click" Web pages. "I was recently re-reading back issues and noticed a GnomeTIP on ways to get around scripts (at the time, the suggestion was to hit CTRL+N to open a new window, or to use File | Properties). Well, as I recently discovered, there is an even easier way. This was only tested in IE; it should work on any Web page. First, left-click and hold. While doing so, right-click. This seems to confuse the browser; yet, up pops your default context menu! You can do anything you normally do - including view the page's source or save an image." Well, you could do that anyway, just not as quickly or easily. To circumvent most of those dialogs, all you have to do is click File | Save As | Web Page, complete. Hey, have you ever used the other Save As option? The one where you could save it as a Web Archive, single file? Perfect for when you want to send a complex HTML document via e-mail without having to worry about attaching more than one self- contained file. And yes, you can open it up in Notepad since it's just a text file with MIME encoded components with originating URLs. Nifty!

{Total CPU discovery} Geeks like myself know how to dig deep into our personal computers and uncover relevant information. But even we have a difficult time getting to the numbers without using powerful utilities. What kind of processor is your system using? Do you know its current core voltage, clock speed, and cache information? CPU-Z will clue you in to all those little things that are going on inside the case (and a whole lot more). And the best part is -- you can't change anything. Which is to say: it's safe for anyone to use. My mom always told me that it's what's on the inside that truly counts.

How to Query the Microsoft Knowledge Base Using Keywords
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q242/4/50.ASP
"This article describes how to more effectively query the Microsoft Knowledge
Base by using keywords, including Microsoft product-specific keywords. By using
keywords, you may be able to find the article or articles that may help to
resolve your issue or question. When you perform a query, begin by using a
product keyword that relates to your issue, such as "win95" for Microsoft
Windows 95, "win98" for Windows 98, "outexw95" for Microsoft Outlook Express for
Windows 95, and so on. You can then combine product keywords with other related
keywords to help narrow your search, and locate the information you need. Note
that if you search by using a small amount of keywords, you may receive a large
amount of articles, possibly making it difficult to find the article you are
looking for."
Nokia Phone Customization
Nokia offers a software package that enables you to upload custom ring tones, display background images and to sync contact information right to your phone so you can avoid the 3 hours it takes to manually enter the 100 most important phone numbers in your life. I don't have 3 hours, and I don't care to shell out the bucks Nokia wants for something I frankly won't use all that often. Gnokii is a free tool that will accomplish many of the same tasks as the full-blown commercial product, and it supports Linux as well as Windows clients. And if you're really a bithead and want to play with things yourself, the source code is included and there are some links that provide the protocol structures for a few phone types on the FAQ page.

{Distributed webserver monitoring} UpNet is an interesting idea in server monitoring in that it doesn't depend on a static location monitoring your resources from remote. When you install the client software, you can specify a URL that you'd like monitored, which is then distributed to other clients on the Internet for testing. These remote clients then test connectivity to your server every few minutes. If a problem is encountered, you can be notified via email within minutes of a failure. There are all sorts of expensive monitoring packages and commercial services available, but they don't provide the wide scope that this distributed client can offer... for free, no less!

Stay up-to-date on all the latest news (ripped from the headlines, so to speak). They'll even let you know about the newest hardware and software releases. Freaks, I tell ya! FREAKS!
Audio Encoding and Editing
khdutton replies: "It is DEFINITELY possible! I prefer to use the freeware program SoundEngine. It is not for the faint of clicking, but is very powerful, and pretty easy to get a handle on. I open up the WAV file, highlight the section I want, copy it, open up a "new" file, paste it, and then save it as a WAV file."
Rodger adds: "If you just want to edit a song down to a selected section, you can do it easily with the Sound Recorder that comes with Windows. Keep in mind though, a WAV file... even a 20 second one... is going to be a rather large file for Internet use. I would convert it to MP3 format before posting the file. I like CDex for ripping, encoding, and converting audio files."
derish also chimes in: "Chris mentioned Audacity a few times on 'Call for Help.' It's open-source, user friendly, and has many features you (or your brother) may find useful."
Thotor W9x/NT/2k FREE

"Thotor is a tool for generating thumbnails of photos and index.html files for

directory of their own. Hmm..." Quit doing things by hand; I know you have
better things to do with your time.
Webpage Design Sizing
I design for 800x600 and I
sometimes resize the browers depending on available width. This way if the web
page comes up in the higher res. browsers they only get the page. And... I've
seen many people surf the web without ever maximizing their screens, so by
resizing (where possible)I am sorta telling them I need this much space to make
the page look ok.
I found a great article by Steve Mulder on webmonkey not to long ago. He did a
great job "Sizing Up the Browsers"

And thanks for the link to cross-browser.com!
Scott's Box Shot Maker W9x/2k/XP FREE
{Create a virtual product package} I may not be a marketing professional, but I know that when I go to buy a product on a Web site I feel a little more reassured about the product if they have a picture of the boxed version of that product. I know that I won't receive a boxed version, but it is just the perception that they have a boxed version that is reassuring to me. Scott's Box Shot Maker will help you take a set of images (one of which might be your company's logo) and turn them into a virtual package for your product. You have the choice of a 2-sided or a 3-sided virtual box. The 2-sided box shows you the front and left side of the box, where the 3-sided box does the same thing but throws in a view of the top. (Did I mention that you can also choose to make a virtual book cover in mere seconds?) Once you have created your virtual product package, what do you do? Save your virtual product package as either a BMP, GIF, or JPG file that is perfect for posting directly to a Web page. I have thought about writing a book and maybe now that I have the power to create an awesome book cover, I may find the motivation to try.

{Find a font} Lookin' for a font? Maybe you aren't at this particular moment, but eventually you'll run across a font that's so amazing you'll go crazy if you don't get your grubby little hands on it. So what does one do in such a situation? You visit this site to narrow down your font search. Just answer a series of questions, and, with any luck, you'll find just what you're looking for. If you already know the name of the font you're searching for, you can do that as well. A list of sites where the font can be found and downloaded is also provided.

JavaScript Cookie Recipe
http://javascript.internet.com/cookies/to-do-list.html
Normally, cookies are assumed to be a bad thing, but I've come to rely on them for some sites so I don't have to constantly re-enter usernames and passwords. I go through them regularly to crumble any that I don't recognize, which keeps them at a reasonable number. Proving that not all cookies are bad, here's a nifty use of them that also helps you keep track of your pending tasks. It's a JavaScript To-Do list that makes use of cookies to store the information it gathers. Even if you're not into the to-do list within a browser, it provides a nice example of how cookies are created and modified for those interested in learning more about the subject.
W3C - World Wide Web Consortium
You've probably at least heard of this organization, but may not know the scope of their responsibility, therefore I thought I'd briefly touch on it, then point out some extremely useful links for you web developer types.
The W3C is the group responsible for defining guidelines used on the Internet, including HTML, CSS, XML, etc. The recognized inventor of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee originally founded the organization in 1994 while working at MIT. Once they planted their roots, they began to work on many different specifications for how content should be developed in order to be as compatible as possible with all of the various resources tied to the Internet. If you want to know the "book answer" on a web standard, this is the place to go.
Aside from just defining the specifications, they've developed some extremely useful tools for developers to use in order to be sure their code is as compatible as possible. Here are just a few of the many valuable links you'll find on their site:

{View multiple Webcams} I like Webcams, you like Webcams, everybody in the world
likes Webcams. Maybe not everybody, but they are rather popular. Jake even
features a new one in the Digital Media newsletter every day. This pictorial
program will keep track of an unlimited number of Webcams and have them
automatically update when you specify. What's really cool for those of you who
like to view multiple cams is the thumbnail option that reduces your pics and
doesn't clog up a lot of desktop space. You also have four GnomeCams from which
to choose. Just though I'd mention that. So what does this have to do with
Camembert cheese? Absolutely nothing.
ZIP Password Finder W9x/NT/2k FREE
http://www.astonsoft.com/prod3.htm
{Recover .ZIP passwords} This password-detecting tool will, oddly enough, reveal ZIPped archive passwords. If you're a frequent zipper (or a frequent unzipper, which I guess is more appropriate) you'll want to download this free utility. Just tell it which archive file to search through, select the character type, and hit Start. That's what's known as a brain-dead simple interface. All this zipping and unzipping reminds me of... a zipper factory. What did you think I was going to say? By the way, XYZ... don't want to be caught with your pants down.

{Create a multimedia interface for CDs} Burning my own CDs is something I do just about every day, but I don't usually put any sort of fancy interface to be used with the Autorun functionality. When I hand the CD to someone else, I usually have to explain where a particular utility is or instructions for performing the installation. MakeCDROM allows you to create a very full-featured multimedia interface to go with your data collection. Great for distributing customized applications to users or even your friends and family, but equally good for simply providing information about the contents of the volume.
I couldn't pass up the chance to use my new Dremel a bit more this weekend to make a few adjustments to various annoyances around the house. Improved quality of life through power tools [insert loud and raucous Tim Allen grunt here]. A few of you inquired as to what the heck a Dremel is, so let me explain. It's basically a handheld grinding tool that can accommodate some exorbitant number of attachments to perform detailed cutting, grinding, sanding, engraving, routing, drilling, sawing, etc. Great things to have around!
There were a number of you that pointed me to the Virtual Hideout, which is a fantastic site to visit if you're even considering making some alterations to your PC case - a Dremel is one of the major tools of the trade. They have a MASSIVE gallery of custom case designs and modifications. Many of the hacks are to provide additional cooling or to attach wheels, handles and carrying straps. Then there's the artwork that goes into these as well... amazing work! I've always kind of wanted to do up a really cool case with a wicked lighting system to spiff up the webcam shot, but I find I lack the artistic talent, not to mention the time. I might give it a go one of these days, though.
Tech Comedy
{Tales from tech supporters} This site is hilarious! Okay, we've all had to call tech support at one time or another (myself included). Most of us know the routine: be in front of the computer, have your serial number ready, etc. But, when you're answering hundreds of calls a day, you're bound to have some interesting stories to relay. This site has ROTFL tales and audio clips from those poor souls in tech support. It's great for an honest laugh. Mind you, some of those audio clips can get nasty; they weren't encoded for the sensitive soul. Geek or otherwise, you'll chuckle.

Em@ilEncoder W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.tucows.com/preview/266685.html
Em@ilEncoder is an anti-spam tool for Webmasters or people that own a Web site and have their e-mail address posted in public. It allows you to create a spam-proof e=mail link that withstands the extraction tools that many spammers use to gather e-mail addresses from the Web. Em@ilEncoder allows you to enter your e-mail address, an optional subject for the e-mail to be sent, and the link text. It then generates a Java code that you can copy and paste into your Web pages. The link will work fine with any browser and your visitors will not notice the spam-proof nature of the link; however, spam robots will not be able to extract it.
Flaming Text
{Free text and graphics} You need graphics. No, I'm telling you: You need graphics. You might be designing a Web page, working on invitations, or any number of things, and this site is there to satisfy all of your graphical needs. The best part is that it's free. Need some cool text effects? Just select the font size, the color, the style, the shadow, the bevel... you get the picture. There's also cool links to clip art, buttons, wallpaper, and tools. All of those things that make your fancy web world even fancier.

{Extract icons easily} We've all seen those war movies where a man gets shot and has to have an icon extracted. Wait, that's not right. Thankfully, the only extracting I have to worry about is done through this powerful puller. It'll dig up icons within EXE, ICO, DLL, ICL, CPL, NIL, and IL file types. Just select the folder or subfolder, click the Search button, and there you have it. The interface is button-based, and you can even change the language setting (you know, in case you want to extract in Russian).

{Dynamic HTML from Favorites} Quit scrolling through all those saved Web links; you've got better things to do with your time (ya know, besides reading Lockergnome). Place all of them into your very own (very dynamic) start page. Have you ever visited pages covered in "boxed" link sections? The process is straightforward, for the most part. The EDUCA front-end sports quite a few fields; it'll help kindle your creation. You will need to change the names of the (appropriate) Favorites folders, but the result should make that switch worthwhile. When you're finished (and satisfied with the results), you can upload your new HTML file to the Web!
ID3-TagIT v2.1.0 [4.0] W9x/2k/XP FREE
Unearthed by Bryan Gauntt
http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/download.htm
{Edit those tags} ID3 tags are those little bits of information that come
attached to MP3s. Ya know, data like artist, song, genre, year, etc. If you've
got a ton of tunes on your system (and I know a few of you do) then these tags
are just the ticket for keeping all those song files in order. Sometimes,
though, that information is either incorrect, needs to be changed, or hasn't
been added at all. The solution: download this Explorer-like editor and get your
tunes sorted out correctly. You can change one song at a time, or edit multiple
files all at once. You can also play your MP3s with it. Go figure.
Diskmap [623k] NT/W2K FREE
http://microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/diskmap-o.asp
"This command-line tool produces a detailed report on the configuration of the hard disk that you specify. It provides information from the registry about disk characteristics and geometry, and reads and displays data about all of the partitions and logical drives defined on the disk. A good way to use this tool is to run it for each disk in your computer, print out the configuration report for each disk, and save the hard copy with the other configuration information that you maintain for your computer. In case of some kinds of disk problems, this information can then be used to reconstruct the hard disk structure." Note: Diskmap is meant for Windows 2000, but a quick test on Windows NT 4.0 Server and Workstation seemed to work ok. Your mileage may vary.
Eraser W9x/NT/2K FREE
"Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper 'Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory' and they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive." I know it's featured in Bits and Bytes too, but I've had several questions about such a tool, so on the off chance that you missed it there (you are visiting the page, aren't you?), I thought it belonged here as well.
Play It By Ear W9x/NT/2k FREE
http://happynote.com/music/learn.html
{Train those ears} Someone may have discovered a way to actually make me want to learn music; they added cartoon characters to the scale. This is one of those games that makes learning less of a chore. In this case, Play It By Ear helps train your ears (!) to recognize different notes. As long as you're not tone deaf, this game can be fun for the whole family. Switch between "real" notes or use "Do Re Mi" if you require a more re-me-di-al approach. Be sure to press the space bar when you need to hear a note more than once. "No previous knowledge of music is required to play [this] Happy Note! [program]"

{Learn to read music} I'm not the most musically inclined person , but as many
of you know, that hasn't stopped me from belting out a song or two. Anyway, it's
never too late to learn and that's what this tuneful utility is all about. Ya
see, it's not a boring lesson, it's an actually game, and it'll teach you how to
read notes. You can set the speed to match your particular expertise, then start
learning. Oh, and you get to fire missiles at the notes... that was my favorite
part.
FormFill W9x/NT/2K FREE
http://www.cerefect.com/FormFill/FormFill.htm
While this normally fits into Chris's newsletter, I found it so useful that I thought you should know about it. How many times do you get forms crossing your desk that you'd rather have filled out by your printer than by hand? All the time for me. There are apps that can scan such forms and you can create form fields in the appropriate places, but that's just too much work for simple things. FormFill prints a grid on a spare copy of the form, then works from the line and column entries that you type in for each field. Enter the data, then crank out the completed forms.
Internet Archive Wayback Machine
{Search the past} You can't visit that site - it's closed. Oh reeeeally? Apparently you haven't heard about this new-fangled / old-fangled search engine? It raises those forgotten URLs from the dead. Okay, not really - but it does search through billions of archived Web pages, giving you a chance to look at Web sites you thought you'd never be able to see again. All you have to do is enter the URL and this engine starts digging. You can even add this search engine to your browser toolbar! I thought I'd never see that again. Seriously, take a look at the way LOCKERGNOME.COM used to appear back in 1997. The more things change, the more they... become different.
PDF Moto v1.4 [9.4M] W2k/XP FREE
http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106751
PDF Moto is automated Web publishing software that converts any MS Word, Excel, or Visio document into PDF format, and can automatically upload it to your Web site and create an index page linking to the files. In fact, it can create entire Web sites automatically. The program uses a centralized approach that allows you to specify a local folder, and any document saved to that folder will be automatically converted and saved to a publishing folder. From there, it can be uploaded to your Web site. The entire process can run automatically; you save a Word document to your specified folder, and it is converted and added to the Web site without further interaction on your end. Navigation and linking are automatically created and the look and feel can be matched with your existing designs using a powerful XML template system. You can even choose to have it create PHP or ASP pages. PDFMoto monitors the source document structure, detects documents that have been added, deleted, or amended, and reflects these changes by automatically updating the site. Additional features include browser-based document submission, document management, unlimited Web site destinations and support for Meta schemes. The free version can maintain a Web site with up to 100 documents and adds a small, very discreet 'Created with...' watermark to the pages. [MWA]
Make Your Own PDF Files
Scribbled by Paul Witheridge
http://www.lexacorp.com.pg/soft/makepdf25.zip
One of today's biggest computing irritations is competing standards! While there
are standards out there for such things as e-mail, file transfer, Internet
protocols, and HTML coding for web display, someone is always "pushing the
envelope" (to be polite) or "ignoring them" (to be blunt). Document sharing is
an example. Many think that Microsoft Word is the standard for documents but it
is only one in a field of word processors. At one time, they simply pretended
each other didn't exist and if you created a document using one word processor,
you couldn't share it with others who were using a competitive product. Now, at
least the major brands provide the ability to convert between formats but often
at the expense of some of your painstaking efforts to create that Beautiful
Format.
Enter Adobe and the Portable Document Format (PDF). If you can create (or "export to") a PDF file with your word processor, you can produce a "stand-alone" document that anyone can see or print exactly as it was created - fonts, pictures, whatever - but without the program that created it! Catch? Of course there's a catch! First of all, you need the Acrobat Adobe Reader to see / print these. Yes, it's free; it is a few megabytes in size and usually has to be downloaded and installed. But how do you create the PDF in the first place? Are we still somewhat at the mercy of the Adobes, Microsofts and Corels? Read on!
There are two freeware (free for non-commercial, home use) programs that can enable you to create (and read) standard PDF files (as well as postscript files): MakePDF, a freeware utility for converting the postscript translations from GhostScript to a Portable Document Format file and GhostScript, a free postscript interpreter which translates postscript documents. NOTE: if the version numbers change, the above links will become outdated. If you visit the Lexacorp site first, there is a link there to GhostScript as well as to MakePDF. After downloading both of these, install GhostScript by double-clicking the EXE file. Then simply unzip MAKEPDF21.ZIP into the folder of your choice (no installation needed). I must assume that the reader can do this using their favorite compressed file unpacker. Then, you need to define a printer that can produce postscript output - such as the HP LaserJet III PostScript+ - in your selection of printers. You do not need to have this printer connected, you merely need to add/install it as if it were installed and configure it to send output to a .PRN file. Here's how.
In Windows, click Start | Settings | Printers and then double- click 'Add Printer.' Choose 'Local Printer' and click 'Next.' Now, select the printer you'd like, making sure that it can produce postscript. The HP LaserJet III PostScript+ is an obvious choice, but other manufacturers are available on the list you'll see. After selecting one, you'll be asked where to output your data and this is where you will choose 'FILE:' and then click 'Next.' Most likely you will not want this to be your default printer, but this option is always available later if your needs should change. Click 'Next' and then 'Finish' and you will most likely be prompted to insert your Windows installation CD in order to retrieve the necessary driver files. After the printer driver files have been copied, you will be prompted for a PRN filename (in case you wanted to print a test page). You can click 'Cancel' to skip this step. Did you know that you could also rename this printer installation to something more helpful like PostScript Creation? Right-click it and Rename!
Once the process is complete (to this point), you will have an additional printer option whenever you wish to "print" a document from any application you are using. When choosing this new option you have just installed, you will be asked for a filename and destination folder since the output will not be a "hard copy" on paper, but a .PRN file on your computer. We now need to create a way to easily send these PRN files created by your newly installed postscript-capable (phantom) printer driver to MAKEPDF which will use GhostScript to finally create the PDF file. One way to provide this "connection" is to add a shortcut in your SendTo links that will appear when you right-click a file in Windows Explorer (or other file manager) and select 'Send To.' Open your \Windows\SendTo folder and right-click a blank spot. Click New | Shortcut and insert the path for MAKEPDF.
Click 'Next' and then name it MakePDF or whatever you like. Click 'Finish' and you're done. Now, you can right-click any PRN file created by your phantom printer and then choose SendTo | MakePDF to create your PDF file. You could also create a shortcut on your desktop in the same way and just drag and drop PRN files onto the icon. There are a few other clever tricks the more advanced user can perform either by defining a new file type (see end of this article) or using macros in your word processor or creating a custom printer port or having your PDF sent directly to your e- mail client but you can read about those in Stuart McLachlan's (author of MAKEPDF) Readme file that comes with MAKEPDF. Most of us will be quite happy with a shortcut in the SendTo folder.
The first time you send a PRN file to MakePDF, you will be asked if you want to locate the GhostScript program. Click 'Yes' and browse your way to the GSWIN32.EXE file - which, if you used the default location, will be in the C:\GS\GS7.03\BIN folder. [Note that there are two similarly named executable files at this location. The one with the 'C' is for command-line operation.] Single-click the GSWIN32.EXE file and click 'Open' and this path will be saved in a MAKEPDF.INI file for future reference and you won't have to repeat this step. MakePDF will now open and you will see the path and filename of your (input) PRN file and the same path - but different file extension - for the output PDF file. Unless you want the PDF file to be put somewhere else or have a different name, you can accept the default offering.
There are options offered, most of which I usually ignore; but here is a brief explanation of them as I understand them: Delete Input File - deletes the PRN file after it has been translated to save collecting large numbers of these intermediate files. Lower Case Output - produces a PDF filename with all lower case letters for feeding to other applications which may require that. Sticky Output Directory - use this if you want to the folder you set in 'Output Filename / Directory' ALWAYS to be the destination of your PDF files. View Output File - check this if you want Acrobat Reader to open your new PDF as soon as it's created. Auto-Exit on success - check this to save having to click the 'Quit' button No Messages - all message boxes are suppressed. I wouldn't recommend this for the beginner.
Choose the version of PDF file you wish to create and after a few seconds, you will see a confirmation dialogue box that the process has been successful. NOTE: In case your intended recipient has an older version of Acrobat Reader, it may be best to create an older version PDF. The resulting PDF file you have now created can be double-clicked to be opened in Acrobat Reader and it will appear exactly as you created it in your original application and anyone with Acrobat Reader can do the same. And print it! But the Reader does not allow editing, just reading and printing. This can be a very good thing when you don't want your document altered by others!
For the more adventurous, (once you are comfortable that you have everything working) you could even establish a new file type (change PRN to something completely new that is not already registered on your computer) so that a simple double-click on files of that type will start MAKEPDF and open them. This involves first avoiding any of the extensions already listed in Start | Settings | Folder Options | File Types and then - in there - creating a 'New Type' and specifying a command line similar to the following to open those files: "[Path]\MAKEPDF.EXE %1 /D /V1.2 /OC:\[Path]\PDFfile.PDF" - inserting the proper path for your installation in place of the bracketed portions. NOTE: if you have difficulty with Acrobat Reader opening PDFs with a double-click, I've found that a reinstall of Acrobat Reader usually solves this.
