About the Ultima Maps

Generally most of the maps found on the Internet are okay, and they can help with playing the games, but they're virtually unreadable. Thankfully, Trigon Dragon has made some JPEG scans of his cloth maps that are absolutely HUGE. I thought this was great, but no matter how large you scan the maps, the original text on the maps is fuzzy; thus the text is difficult to read.

Many thanks to Trigon Dragon for the original JPEG scans of the Ultima 3 through 6 maps. I took them, cleaned them up a bit, and replaced the fuzzy cloth text with crisp, readable, computer-generated Ultima Runes. The result? These are by far the cleanest, most ledgible maps made available on the Internet!

I decided that not everyone wants huge maps, so in addition to the large, retouched maps, I shrunk them by fifty-percent and made sure they were still ledgible.

The Ultima 1 and Ultima 2 maps were found somewhere on the Internet, the Ultima Dragon's original web-site, I think, and have cleaned them up. The Ultima 2 map has actually become useful!

Ultima 1, Map 4

All four maps are around 70K each, and all are about 380x580 in size.

The Ultima 1 maps got the least amount of attention. While the text can be a little difficult to read in the key, the text only describes the land types--mountains, grass, roads, etc. Therefore, the text is not that vital. I cleaned up the original maps a bit.

There are four maps detailing the land of Sosaria, broken into the four different realms. For the most part, the layout of the land is more important than the text.

Ultima 2 Map

Ultima 2 Map

Ultima 2 Map The Ultima 2 map is 78K and is 642x499 in size.

The Ultima 2 map that I started with was a little smaller and was a lot more pixellated. The text was nearly unreadable, and unless you knew what the symbols were supposed to be, were nothing but smudges.

I smoothed out the map, touched up the color, and re-typed the text with the Ultima Runes true-type font. Using the Ultima 2 documents as a reference for the symbols representing the time periods, I was able to reconstruct the time-symbols.

Ultima 3 Maps

Small Ultima 3 Map
Large Ultima 3 Map
The small map is 111K and is 903x633 in size.
The large map is 207K and is 1806x1266 in size.

This map was originally scanned by Trigon Dragon. I've touched up the colors, and have replaced all the original fuzzy runic text with the Ultima Runes true type font.

There was no text in the middle of the map. As the original documents stated, the map was incomplete. Origin intended gamers to either write directly on the map (*GASP!*), or use push-pins to mark important places.

Ultima 4 Maps

The small map is 130K and is 837x839 in size.
The large map is 285K and is 1674x1678 in size.

This map was originally scanned by Trigon Dragon. Again, have replaced all the original fuzzy runic text with the Ultima Runes true type font. I didn't touch the color on this one--it's bright enough as it is!

Apparently there was more than one map for Ultima 4. The map that Trigon scanned has more text describing more places. The cloth map I have is less detailed, and has fewer places marked. Thankfully, the map on this site has everything.

The moongates were marked on the map with fuzzy spots that were difficult to see and make out. I've replaced the them with crisp, computer generated moongate markers.

Ultima 5 Maps

The small map is 150K and is 754x774 in size.
The large map is 289K and is 1508x1547 in size.

This map was originally scanned by Trigon Dragon. I've touched up the colors, and have replaced all the original fuzzy runic text with the Ultima Runes true type font. Because of the overwhelming darkness of the whole map, and the stark, contrasting colors, I had to put a white "halo" around the text to make it readable.

The moon phase markers were quite fuzzy, so again they were replaced with computer generate moons.

This map used a smaller size Runic font than the previous maps. While the large map is easy to read, the small map is a little more difficult. I did what I could to make the fonts readable on the smaller map.
