If your question isn't answered here, check out the Ultima Q&A.
I've had people ask me many different questions about the Ultima Theme and occasionally my web pages. I've always tried to help them the best I can, but there seems to be some redundancy. Since there have been questions from a few people, there obviously must be many more people who have the same questions but don't have the time to e-mail me. While this section of Q&A doesn't quite constitute a FAQ, it should help many people. If you have a question that isn't answered here, please don't hesitate to e-mail me and I'll do what I can!

Questions & Answers

Are you ever going to update your web page?
Don't hold your breath. I do not have the time I once had to maintain, let alone update my website. As such, I will not longer update my site. However, instead of removing it from the Internet, I will let it stay in it's current form. E-mails to me may or may not get answered. I have little time to spend on Ultima anymore and others in the Ultima Dragons will be more than willing to help.

Question I don't have a Desktop Theme listing in my Control Panel, what do I do?
Answer Well, that means that you didn't buy the Plus! pack from Microsoft. Fortunately, you can still install most of the Theme manually. (Refer to the Readme.Doc file that came with the Ultima Theme for more information on manual installation.)

However, there is hope. There are many nice programs that can install Desktop Themes. They can be found at Windows95.Com in the Desktop Managers area.

Also like a program called Desktop Theme. This program will give you the same functionality of the Plus! pack without having to buy the Plus! Pack.

You can get DeskTop Themes program from the Desktop Themes Homepage.

Question Why don't you provide the Guardian Screen Saver with your Ultima Theme?
Answer Because I don't like it. Simple enough. It's an average screensaver, but it's not something that I would be proud to publish. I wanted to write my own screensaver, but that's a lot more work than simply creating a desktop theme. I don't plan on making it part of the Ultima Theme at any time in the future.

Question I have tried to download the full version of the theme. However, the FTP site requests an username and password, which I don't have (aside from from my local ISP). Any help would be appreciated.
Answer Hmmm... I put the file on several public file-servers (Coast to Coast acrhives around the world) and I don't know what happened. It shouldn't need a password. If you wish, you can try one of these links listed here. Or go to the files area where there are 3 mirrors listed directly.

Question I am trying to capture one of the portraits used in Ultima 7 -Serpent Isle.
Answer Here, let me make this much easier for you. You don't have to run Ultima 7 to get the images!

There's a file in my Files Area called U7Shapes.Zip. It allows you to view any and all of the graphics from any of the Ultima 7 games. It's the program that I used to get images from Ultima 7 for the Ultima Theme. Be sure when you run the program to press the F1 key for more detailed help. It's much more helpful than the poor documentation that comes with the program.

Then you use the up, down, left, right, page-up, page-down and other keys to navigate. I prefer to press the "c" key to change the black background to red so you can get the black outlines that are supposed to be around most of the graphics.

Now to get the images, use the program called Screen Thief (also on my Files page) and get clean screen-shots of your favorite images.

Question When I try to run Install.Bat it always tells me: The following directory does not exist: "C:\Program files\Plus!\Themes\"

I make this directory but it continues to ignore it. Please help me!

Answer Okay, one of two things are happening here.

1) You don't have the Plus! pack.

You started fine, but you need to put a file into that newly created directory. Any file will do. The Install program is checking for the existence of files in the directory (because that's all that DOS knows how to do).

Once done, you'll be able to install the Theme alright, but since you don't have the Plus! pack, you'll need to install it either manually or go to my Theme installation web page.

At that site you'll find 4 different programs that let you install Desktop Themes without the Plus! pack, and how to install themes manually.

2) You have the Plus! pack, but installed it to a different directory than C:\Program Files\Plus!

In this case, simply edit the Install.Bat file to point to the location of the Plus! pack. So if you installed the Plus! pack to D:\Plus!, you would change the C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes to read D:\Plus!\Themes.

Question I wrote some e-mail to you because I was having trouble with your theme and you never replied! Why?!
Answer I try to respond to everyone's email that I recieve. Unfortunately, sometimes when I reply to your e-mail, the return address doesn't exist! So no matter how hard I try, I can't respond because the address is bad.

If you want me to respond to your private e-mail you send to me, make sure your return address is valid.
