WEEKLY INFORMATION NET---1ST-2ND-4TH THURSDAY AT 7PM ON THE REPEATER
The Hunt County Office Of Emergency Management called on the Sabine Valley Amateur Radio Association
Saturday Morning Sept. 3rd 2005 at 7am to assist in the relocation of evacuees from Hurricane Katrina that
would be arriving in Hunt County at the Greenville YMCA at 8am. By 8am we had 2 operators at the YMCA to
provide assistance. We then relocated some assets to the Hunt County Fairgrounds to setup a communications
net between the YMCA and the Fairgrounds where the evacuees long term shelter operations would be setup.
We were operational by 8:45am & provided communications for the OEM for the next 12 hours. Continuous
staffing by amateur operators at the fairgrounds has continued to provide both communications by amateur radio
& wireless internet to provide assistance to the evacuees in their efforts to locate family members scattered
throughout Texas and numerous other states. We have also staffed 2 computer terminals daily to help evacuees
enter the assistance request into the FEMA website & search survivor databases for family and friends. We have
had the good fortune to reunite 10-12 evacuees with their loved ones by phone & in person and relocated another
8-10 to temporary housing.
