Magnet Tutorial Project and Contributors

In August of 1994 we were awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant [DE-FG05-94ER-81813] to develop a multimedia CD-ROM tutorial on superconducting accelerator magnets, targeted for undergraduate science students. This project was completed in spring 1998.

In order to accommodate a variety of technical backgrounds and abilities, the tutorial includes multiple levels of content. It starts with very basic introductions of its concepts and progresses to the complex issues that magnet designers must consider. It includes many photographs, diagrams, and video clips to illustrate magnet functions and construction.

Contributors:

The tutorial content is based on research and development results from the major international accelerator laboratories. Material is also derived from major accelerator and magnet conference proceedings, publications from the institutions involved in magnet R&D, and contributions by individual engineers and scientists. There are video clips of the RHIC dipole cold mass production at Northrup Grumman and the SSC dipole cryostat operations at Fermilab.

Major contributors include:
Arnaud Devred, CEA Saclay and former SSCL
Rainer Meinke, Advanced Magnet Lab and former SSCL
Carl Goodzeit, former BNL and SSCL
Gerry Morgan, BNL
Peter J. Lee, U. of Wisconsin
David Johnson, former SSCL
