2009 NESurfski Downwind Run

An overcast start from Kittery Point
After the forecast threatened 30knts and 10' waves at the beginning of the week, then promised 10 knts and 4' waves in the middle of the week, the course ended up being flat and windless on Sunday.

Paddlers from MA and ME gathered on Long Sands in York to see there'd be little surfing other than the last 30 meters to the beach finish. Disappointed, especially after being teased by a promising forecast, they raced regardless. The start from Kittery was swift, with Cory Lancaster leading the field out with Eric McNett and Alex McLain close behind. Alex fell back from the front as Graeme Rockett started his chase for Lancaster and McNett.

Eric McNett and Lancaster paddled close together for the course, intermittently testing each other with surges of effort. Veteran racer McNett didn't fall for any of Lancaster's tricks and the two entered the final two miles together. With the last headland past and Long Sands in sight, McNett powered away and put a 2min 20 secs gap between himself and Cory to win in 1:11:30. Lancaster came in second.

Third, fourth and fifth place were decided on the run up the beach as Rockett, McDonough and Mathieu landed within seconds of each other. Alex McLain won the women's race in 1:24:31. Full results are online.

The organizer, Andrew Binks would like to thank the competitors for racing despite the lack of waves, and also those who helped run the event on the day; the Kittery Harbormaster, Amber Emerson and Ellen Stewart.
